Description The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 8 (Constructing the Sword)

Have you ever asked yourself "How do I make a sword?"more pricesely a katana. Well If you have asked that question then I am here to help you answer that. This swordmaking Tutorial will cover everything you need to know about swordmaking. It has an attractive layout, easily readable discriptions, easier to understand discriptions and step by step pictures to know which process you are at. These swordmaking tutorials are aimed towards swordmakers and propmakers, however anybody is free to use them at their own leisure to try swordmaking.

*cue eerie music* congratulations, you have made it to the final stage of swordmaking. You have just painted all the parts of your katana but now you must put them together. First goes the tsuba along up from the handle then you attach the handles on either side of the tang. Then you form the hilt on the end of the handles once they are in place. Then you give the handle a final coat of paint and the sword becomes a complete katana. Just a note you can use woodglue also to just stick the handles onto the tang, or instead of using screws use wooden dowels. As mentioned how to do the handle wrapping or "tsuka" is not included in this tutorial, but in seperate tutorials instead. I hope you have followed every step successfully!! and enjoy ^^

I don't get it @_@
I mean last time I made a Katana the blade snapped during regular use (I.E while unsheathing it) because it was made out of thin wood

It was a joke, the tutorial is for katanas, but at the end you say that you hope we all make "great swords", which if you had been speaking could have sounded like "greatswords" a kind of sword that is not a katana.

or did you mean I was not understanding what it was that you meant?

CabooseJTS [2011-06-19 22:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Your sword making tutorials are great. Are the swords you make able to be used in actual sparring or are they just for decoration and such? I ask this because two of my friends and I were planning on having a sparring match sometime in the future, but using real swords would be completely idiotic of us, so i offered to make wooden swords since I'm the only one with wood working experience. I've never made wooden swords before i decided to find a tutorial and found this, and it makes me think that i could actually make some quality Katanas now. Oh, and would i be able to adapt this tutorial to be able to make a wooden version of a Kodachi as well as a Katana? or should i look for another tutorial for that?

Sorry for the large comment by the way.

chioky In reply to CabooseJTS [2011-06-19 23:26:37 +0000 UTC]

Well first thing I would say is take it easy on the sparring, would hate to lose an eye now. And if your gonna use the swords for sparring then this tutorial can't help you. One good swing and these swords would snap.

But regardless the changes I would make simply would be, 100m thickness of the blade, unsharpened with a rounded tip.

CabooseJTS In reply to chioky [2011-06-20 00:23:34 +0000 UTC]

ok, thanks for your help. Do you think it would be possible to make a Kodachi using this guide too? or would it be best for me to look for a guide on how to specifically build Kodachi?

CTYankee22 [2011-06-01 13:26:47 +0000 UTC]

For all future sword builders: I'd suggest Kenpachi Zaraki's sword as a starter project :^) It's big, it's accustomed to rough handling, and if you make a mistake while cutting, no one will notice the blemish because of all the damage the real one has sustained. Just thinking aloud...

@chioky, Very cool! But admit it, you like the sharpening part too. The splinters, then dust, the sandpaper, it's all so visceral.

chioky In reply to CTYankee22 [2011-06-01 15:03:13 +0000 UTC]

how do you think people would make the guard of kenpachi's sword then?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CTYankee22 In reply to chioky [2011-08-05 17:06:11 +0000 UTC]

I'd carve (chisel) it out of a dowel using a concave gouge, then cut it to length, mark location & size for the shaft, split it lengthwise, notch each half around the tang, and glue it back together, and finally paint.
