Description
The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 8 (Constructing the Sword)Have you ever asked yourself "How do I make a sword?"more pricesely a katana. Well If you have asked that question then I am here to help you answer that. This swordmaking Tutorial will cover everything you need to know about swordmaking. It has an attractive layout, easily readable discriptions, easier to understand discriptions and step by step pictures to know which process you are at. These swordmaking tutorials are aimed towards swordmakers and propmakers, however anybody is free to use them at their own leisure to try swordmaking.
*cue eerie music* congratulations, you have made it to the final stage of swordmaking. You have just painted all the parts of your katana but now you must put them together. First goes the tsuba along up from the handle then you attach the handles on either side of the tang. Then you form the hilt on the end of the handles once they are in place. Then you give the handle a final coat of paint and the sword becomes a complete katana. Just a note you can use woodglue also to just stick the handles onto the tang, or instead of using screws use wooden dowels. As mentioned how to do the handle wrapping or "tsuka" is not included in this tutorial, but in seperate tutorials instead. I hope you have followed every step successfully!! and enjoy ^^

I get this question asked to much, the tsuba stays in place because of the tsuka and the habakai

Ah of course! Silly me... And does it stay firmly in place?

This will definitely come in useful sometime! I'm tempted to simply design my own katana and make one for fun. >>
Have you ever thought of trying to make double-edged, medieval-style swords? I'm trying to make one of those, myself, but haven't found many tutorials. :/

Nice tutorial you have here for making a nice looking (if not terribly durable) sword.
However, (I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this) I have noticed that what you refer to as the "hilt" throughout all these tutorials would more rightly be called the "pommel" (though, of course, the Japanese term would be something else entirely--"kashira" maybe, I'm not entirely sure). The "hilt" is actually the entire base of the sword, which includes the guard, the grip, and the pommel--essentially everything other than the blade.
You also stress the need for gold plated screws for use in wood. Really in this application, the only requirement would be a countersinking head. In general, depending what you're doing with it, you can pretty much use any screw you want in wood as long as it has a pointed tip. The only other important thing to remember is that coarse threads are better for soft woods (like pine) and fine threads are better for hardwoods (things like oak).

Wow!! These tutorials are quite awesome and easy to follow!! I am currently making a Szayel outfit, so I'll definitely use these tutorials when I'll come to the Zanpakutou stage! Thank you very much for sharing these and the drawing of Fornicaras' Tsuba!
Have you tried actually doing the Tsuba? Because right now just thinking about it I really don't see how I could manage to do that big round shape ... Not as simple as Ulquiorra's, unfortunately...
