Description
... this is the first or second doodle I ever did for the Joker design... initially, there was the idea floating around that the Joker could be decked out as a 'mad scientist'. Also, I wasn't sure how far Eidos was trying to push the Joker's gruesomeness, so I did a few tries with the heavily scarred and torn mouth, but there was too much of a resemblance to Heath Ledger's Joker, so we eventually went a different route. This is the process I absolutely LOVE about design in general: the exploration of ideas... just throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks, BUT like I said before, the Joker was one of the hardest designs to nail down.

... really?!? I looove the torn mouth! BUUUT the first time I saw that idea was waaay before the movie, and my fellow artist Lee Bermejo had done it (I actually wouldn't be surprised if Chistopher Knolan was inspired by Lee's doodle), but that 'look' has become synonymous with the movie, so it was best to stay away from it.

Well, but I do like the concept of the torn mouth in itself; I just don't think it fits if applied to the Joker character. I think a "rictus grin" for example is much more fitting to him.
And yes, the unavoidable association with Nolan's movies (which, by the way, I don't like at all....) would have made it unappropriate to give Joker a split mout in the videogame, anyway.
But despite everything, it's a very good design.
