Download for readable.Will do next thing on how to change the colour of the pattern and using masks and stuff.
You can make any size a pattern.
I suggest you fiddle around with the settings to find out what you can do.

does it matter how big the pattern is? cuz i tried making one that was 400-400px and i saved it as a .pat(i think) but it doesn't show up when i refresh my patterns list or even when i close out and restart gimp

It should still work whatever the size afaik. All I could think is checking it's in the right place (this tutorial was win xp so may not apply as much to win7)

it was in the right place(i use windows xp too) it was in the gimp 2.6,share,gimp, patterns. i'll double check the file extension though
