Description a more modern twist to my usual stuff. A bit of chrome and glass that provided a perfect window to an abstract scene.

Inside I've placed a small brass watch base - which was from a very old vintage wrist watch made sometime in the 1920-30s. It was far beyond salvage so it is just perfect for a base. You can see the golden brass base in the photos.

I've chosen a selection of gears to place inside. Some are from watches but one is from a timer. As well as gears there are some star-shaped pieces of hardware that add to the toothy look.

There are two tiny hands in the piece. The larger one was once part of a fancy men's watch - and as you can see it has a bit of a hole in the arrow part. It is actually a "glow-in-the-dark" arrow head.

I love this... and there's nothing better than supporting artists rather than buying unoriginal jewelry in a shop. Do you have an Etsy account or something?

Wow, this is a really magnificent piece of work. I wish I could own something that looked so intriguing..... but even if it was for sale, I'm broke again..... oh well.

This is a very inspiring piece as well. It really gave mesome neat ideas for some of my in progress stories! ~

Very beautiful. You're really talented! Are you still making more?

Classic and awesome. I love how my attention is drawn right to the arrow (hour hand?). Great work!

It's a pity watch making is dieing out, I always thought clock-work was really neat.

This is such a true comment. The very last watch maker course in Canada was cancelled about 8 yrs ago or so. I know that I can find a course in the US but it would be crazy expensive. Watchmaking is a dying art. Clock repair of large clocks can be even more difficult.

Sometimes I feel i'm born in the wrong time - but when i think of women's rights and work conditions... i'm glad I'm here!

if you have access to the tools to make gears, you could probably teach yourself a lot of clockwork techniques.

I wonder if there isn't some sort of wiki for clockwork.

You are right - I should at the least get a few books on it! I'd need a machine shop to cut the gears. That kind of equipment is pretty darn expensive. I suppose I could always get them specialy made if I wanted. I just need to win some money or something.

What are you making your gears out of now then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clockwork-zero In reply to Arcticswift [2008-12-18 14:46:29 +0000 UTC]

The gears come from watches, pocketwatches and clocks. I had a collection of broken watches that I've had for years. There are also machine parts from different machines I've stripped out. I would say, there aren't many people i know that make the gears - it really takes precision machinery.

I'm blown away by your work.
I'd love to make jewelry like that. How do you do it?

It already sold. i wish i had more time to make jewelry. One day I will! This particular piece was a bit of experimentation. I lucked out finding a nice men's watch at a garage sale. That became the base. Then you "empty it out" and find a base for everything. I used epoxy and a few other glues. It was fun. Give it a try!!

That really looks cool with all the gears showing.
And the arrow adds just the right touch.

Have you ever thought of just taking a watch and only taking out the part showing the numbers so you can still tell the time and see the gears inside? I hope i made sense...

hello InvaderVal!
how are things?

I know the kind of thing you mean - like a skeleton watch! I actually bought a simple one for my partner last year. He loves it but it got all banged up when he took a tumble off his bike.

Most of the watches I get are really "dead" - not working for various reasons. I've managed to get a few that move to a degree but it takes considerable work and luck. Alas, usually the face of most watches holds parts in place and when you remove the face... sometimes it is quite disappointing how few things show through. sigh.

Yeah I've seen some skeleton watches and I always thought they looked so cool! =3

so i'm guessing that's why you usually use the parts from the watch instead?

yup. i actually cannot bring myself to take apart anything that is working. terrible! or if it sort of works - ticks... then I will try and fix it. this means i have a small pile of watches that i hope to fix one day. lol.

I have bad luck with anything that works.
Just yesterday I bought a Fullmetal Alchemist pocket watch from an Anime convention. While i was eating I noticed that it was an hour ahead so when i tried to turn it back an hour the minute hand just kinda stopped working. That's what I get for buying the one on display instead of a new one...

ARRRG!
can you return it? that is sooo annoying.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InvaderVal In reply to clockwork-zero [2008-11-29 02:03:33 +0000 UTC]

Well no. I bought it at a convention, you can rarely find a vendor who will give you money back.
Besides the convention was last week and the vendor is long gone to the farthest parts of the earth by now.

clockwork-zero In reply to InvaderVal [2008-11-29 15:41:01 +0000 UTC]

arg! thats terrible. I always make sure that people can reach me when I've sold something -=- because things can go wrong. I had some bad jumprings that I had to return once and i made sure to fix the one piece I had sold. I felt terrible.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. what a colossal bother. but if I ever sell at a Convention - I'm going to make sure people can contact me if there are problems!!!

InvaderVal In reply to clockwork-zero [2008-11-29 17:59:16 +0000 UTC]

that would be awesome. =3
I wish more vendors would do that. Like give out little cards with the item with the contact number and mailing address in case something goes wrong.

Thank you! I appreciate the comment. Its a bit more modern looking than a lot of the steampunk jewelry I make, so I wasn't sure if it would work.
Thanks for commenting!
