Arnold was tired of school. People were picking on him seemingly nonstop. He was tired of his life at home. His parents were either ignoring him or getting on to him about something he did or didn't do. He was even tired of his friends. Those few friends he did have seemed more concerned about each other than Arnold. He wanted to get away from everything.

One morning, on his way to the bus, he encountered a spiral staircase leading upwards. It looked like it was leading to some sort of afterlife, but that was not the case. It was leading to his current life. The life he did not seem to actually be living.

Arnold went up the staircase one step at a time. With each step, parts of his old life were left behind. The changes started small like all black clothing, longer hair, smoother skin, and less body hair. His taste in music changed to mostly punk rock.

Once those changes were done, its true nature became clear. The genitals changed making him female. Any personal identification listed a female named Ashley instead of a male named Arnold. Even her personality changed. Ashley became more rebellious and carefree. She did not care what happened to her as she continued up the staircase.

The changes were not yet done. Her tennis shoes changed into black boots. A way too long belt wrapped around her waist. Fishnets formed under her clothes though they could not yet be seen. Streaks of purple were added to the black in key areas. Gradually her pants shrank until they formed a short, black leather skirt.

All that remained of her male clothing was her hat and that was blown away in a gust of wind. Ashley noticed her hat was blown away but she did not react because she did not care in the slightest. She was free from everything just like she wanted to be.

Ashley reached the top of the staircase and walked down a path leading to her new school. She would just let the haters hate. It was not her concern.
