Avery walked out of the game store with the bag containing the bag he just bought hidden underneath his coat just in case anyone might be watching. He was in his teens and had purchased the virtual reality game, Undersea Adventure. The main character was a mermaid who had to do things like select her outfit, choose her partner for the big dance, and save the kingdom from an evil mermaid sorceress who could control any non-sentient underwater creature outside the mermaid kingdom. It was clearly intended for young girls but Avery did not care. He wanted to play it!

As soon as Avery got home, he downloaded the game onto his computer, made sure the virtual reality equipment was working properly, and started playing. All VRPGs tried to have something unique and Undersea Kingdom was no exception. Since the mermaid kingdom was miles under the sea, the game made use of all three dimensions. With the slightest movements of his eyes, head, arms, and legs, Avery could control his avatar and make her go anywhere he wanted her to go.

Being in his teens, Avery was better than most of them at color coordinating his outfits. Others would often ask him how he got his outfit. He even had the option of receiving a prize for his outfit. He declined it because he thought it would not be fair.

All the NPCs his avatar could pick for the dance required her to do something beforehand. The tasks would vary depending on if the NPC was intellectual, athletic, social, rebellious, or a combination of all those things. Performing tasks to get a date for the dance was not very realistic but that was the way such games had been played for over a century.

The main part of the game involved saving the mermaid kingdom from an evil mermaid sorceress and the sea creatures she controlled. It worked basically the way he expected a junior virtual role playing game to work. There was combat ranging from easy to moderately difficult that never became too gory or too frustrating.

The game was fine but that was not the reason Avery decided to play it. He wanted to play it because it gave him a chance to interact with others as a girl without having to worry about being discovered. If he also had to act younger to blend in, that was fine with him. Being one of the older players, others looked to Avery to help them out and he was glad to oblige.

While playing the game, Avery was fine. Nobody asked him anything embarrassing. However, when not playing the game, he was embarrassed to admit to playing it. In an attempt to help him overcome his fear, he agreed to team up with one of the young girls who lived in his neighborhood.

Avery took the task seriously, but he hoped she would not say anything that would give him away. She treated the whole situation so casually that he knew it was inevitable. One day while in a group she did mention that he was a boy. He wanted to log off and hide but he knew this was a fear he had to face. That was why he teamed up with her in the first place.

They were fairly casual about it just like she was. He was not happy about the situation but he knew it was more him than anyone else. He just hoped that such feelings would fade with time.
