Yes they can. If you want to see one, there was an older woman that shot one in Arkansas, United States. It was in the news late last year. (local news mind you, so it might be a bit hard to find)

I knew about bucks losing and regrowing their antlers every year, but I didn't know about the neck swelling. Β I always assumed that older bucks had thicker necks and that the ones with "normal" looking necks were young. Β
I also noticed that I have been drawing my deer with incorrect torso shape, as I always thought they grew thinner toward the Β hips.
This tutorial is very useful and appreciated. Β c:

I have hunted Deer for many years, and can vouch for all your information. Β Good job on pointing out things like swollen necks only in Rut and things. Β This is a good anatomy tut.

Neat! Thank you for this~
Do their antlers literally just fall off?

Yup. They just knock right off after the rut, sometime during the winter. It's not a uniform kinda thing; each deer is different. I've seen bucks hold onto their old antlers as long as spring, where the new growth had finally knocked them off.

Thank you for this! I had 0 idea why Google images was giving me pictures of bucks who looked insanely bulked up and then bucks who looked really scrawny. Now I know why and will know in the future!

nice ^^ my dad and my sister's boyfriend hunt as well. I'll just hunt them with my paintbrush (if we'd have the possibility to go after them with crossbows or compound bows, I'd eventually join them, but it'S not legal in Austria. You need an exceptional permission or such...)
