These are indeed very helpful! But I have to ask, could this also work with beast like alt modes? Like Beast Wars and such. Or is it a bit far beyond your limit?

it works for any sort of character ^^ the basics are the same, just gotta apply them to the respective universe/theme

Thank you! I still have a lot of room for improvement and there are a few things I need to fix on him but he still looks a lot better design wise now

I'm having the same problem as Saina-chan, but I just can't seem to work with the solution you provided them. (I'm using a monocycle.) Could mass shifting be an exception in this situation, or is there anything else I could do? Sorry if it's an inconvenience that I bumped this roughly 3-4 years later.

crimson-nemesis In reply to ExplosiveKrypton [2017-08-02 08:26:17 +0000 UTC]

motorcycls and the likes are hard to design with logical mass, gotta agree there ^^ a certain degree of mass shifting isn't wrong, it happens in canon as much as with OC's, you just shouldn't overdo it - otherwise the character will feel illogical. Sometimes it can also help to adjust the vehicle mode, as in take the one you want and upgrade it a little, add a bit more weight and parts to it that could hold the robot mass. Custom vehicles give you way more freedom than real life ones.

but always remember, the character is yours and should make you happy, if you want to use more mass shifting to get it done, do so some might not like it but eventually it's your creation and you should feel comfortable with them and be happy about them.

what if there's a large piece of glass that covers a lot of the altmode? would it be possible to separate the glass up into several pieces? or would that just break it completely?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crimson-nemesis In reply to Namarama [2015-11-23 19:43:41 +0000 UTC]

I usually also segment bigger glass parts - from my point of view it's way more durable than earth-made glass so it would not shatter easily during transformation

This is absolutely amazing! Not only is your artwork lovely, but I also love the way you describe things. I think I've learned more about designing a Transformer than I've ever learned about how to draw anime [from those 'how to draw' books]! …Though I'm a perfectionist, and need to make sure about how transformations work before designing my character. |D

On that note, I was actually wondering if you could give me a bit of assistance on that? I'm trying to create a femme Autobot with an alt mode of a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and am having troubles trying to figure out how I should structure her around it… Any tips or ideas on how I can make it work? (I can also offer more of a visual, since I know exactly what look I'm going for here. I have references pictures already at the ready.)

crimson-nemesis In reply to Silnev [2014-05-29 06:48:06 +0000 UTC]

what you call your character is up to you ^^ What I'd call it would be illogical considering the jet mass doesn't fit into a Delorean.

if you feel offended by a simple tutorial than you'd might want to change the way you look at things because I won't change my turorial, sorry ^^ fortunately many people think my tutorials helpful so I'm still content with them

I can't apply these -awesome- tips right now, simply because I have no way of doing digital art, and using things like this never works for me with the traditional pencil-and-eraser... but as soon as I get something to do digital art, I'll definitely put it all to use! 8D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crimson-nemesis In reply to Retired-GriefAura [2014-01-03 16:31:20 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I don't really understand why you need to go digital to do the things I explained in this tutorial ^^ but let me see what you come up with once you get to it ^^

Retired-GriefAura In reply to crimson-nemesis [2014-01-03 20:36:07 +0000 UTC]

XD Alright, I will. I've tried this method with my traditional art... honestly, I just can't pull it off that way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crimson-nemesis In reply to Retired-GriefAura [2014-01-04 11:52:39 +0000 UTC]

hm well but honestly changing to digital art won't make you able to pull it off if it doesn't work on paper either the basics don't differ on the medium you use

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Retired-GriefAura In reply to crimson-nemesis [2014-01-04 19:38:43 +0000 UTC]

XD; I know. I just have trouble with the pencils and brushes I use- I'm happy with the results of the skeletons I make, but I can't get much further in the art after that point. Smearing when I try to erase pencil is the main problem, really. ;I That might have something to do with the amount of pressure I use, and not the tools... xc I've tried digital art at a friend's house, and it was wonderful~ but until I'm able to get something of my own to do it with, I can't just keep invading his house to do my art.

crimson-nemesis [2014-01-02 22:59:30 +0000 UTC]

Well the tips are always the same and apply for every sort of altmode - you character will be convincing if you keep the mass logical, include necessary parts to identify the vehicle behind it and take care to include a robotic -touch - gaps, joints, mechanics and so on. The difficulty with motorcycles and small vehicles of that sort is the little mass. All you can do there is to either make your character thin or small. Where you place the tired or certain parts is up to you and follows the same ideas shown with the flyers and cars.

hope this makes sense to you ^^ if not, let me know (I also have several character designs in my gallery which are based on motor cylces if you want to check out some ideas)
