I am glad that this tutorial has helped everyone create some cute pixel works! As of April 2018 I will be disabling comments on this post as I am not able to give tutorials beyond what is provided. This tutorial is now out of date to the current software of GIMP but a lot of the same general rules still reply. Please check below for an updated tutorial.FOR THE NEWEST VERSION OF GIMP:

Saving as animation is different on the new version so please use it if you get stuck! YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO PUT THE WORD (LAYER #)(REPLACE) IN YOUR LAYER NAME! JUST MAKE SURE THAT THEY LAYERS ARE IN THE ORDER THAT YOU WANT THEM TO ANIMATE INT!!

i've been trying but i fail :c and im not sure what i'm doing wrong

well I started when I was 14ish and I'm 16 and a half now. And I don't consider myself a great pixel artist so it just takes time. Usually I go through phases where I do loooads of pixeling and then just stop for months but you never really forget how, whenever I come back to it after a long period of time I just get right back into it. Just pick a favourite programme or film and try some small pixels using the characters and such. I started with Icons which are good because they're only 50x50 and began to do more elaborate things over time

no GIMP 2.6 is an art program similar to photoshop but free, you have to download it off the internet and use it instead of paint.

yes, top left it says file, you click it. next you click the button that says new image to create the blank page you're going to start your pixel on... it's all right there

you can feel free to mail me but everything you need to do is explained right there. Nobody else has had trouble understanding it and I've also just attempted to explain what to do. if there's a specific thing you need help with then I'm happy to help but you're not being precise enough.

yeah you can animate with all versions but the buttons will be different and you may have to use a tutorial for that specific version.
