I am glad that this tutorial has helped everyone create some cute pixel works! As of April 2018 I will be disabling comments on this post as I am not able to give tutorials beyond what is provided. This tutorial is now out of date to the current software of GIMP but a lot of the same general rules still reply. Please check below for an updated tutorial.FOR THE NEWEST VERSION OF GIMP:

Saving as animation is different on the new version so please use it if you get stuck! YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO PUT THE WORD (LAYER #)(REPLACE) IN YOUR LAYER NAME! JUST MAKE SURE THAT THEY LAYERS ARE IN THE ORDER THAT YOU WANT THEM TO ANIMATE INT!!

If you want to move two objects independently, eg peach and a heart, do you just use different layers?

Okay, I needs some help!!!
I followed everything you said but now my icon is ALOT smaller than I was expecting it to be and it doesn't move. Can you think of what I did wrong? Suggestions?

Hmmm, it's never happened to me before... Are you sure it's 50x50 when you start? And if you use things suck as pictures off of the internet as a template with GIMP it can sometimes be tricky to regain the right size... If you're still having trouble just note me letting me know exactly what you did when you were making it and I'll see if I can help c:

Okay, well it still didn't work. So here are my steps, in order. Tell me what you think I did wrong, if you can!
File
New
Change Width to 50
Change Height to 50
Change Fill With to Transparency
Change 100% to 800%
Applied coloring for my blueberry
Edited Layer Attributesβchanged name to β1(replace)β
Duplicated 1(replace)
Edit Layer Attributesβchanged name form β1(replace) copyβ to β2(replace)
Moved 2(replace) up one pixel
File
Save Asβ¦
Entitled βBlueberry:
Select File Type
GIF Image
Save
Save As Animation
Export
Crop
Delay Between Framesβ400 milliseconds
Frame disposal where unspecified: One frame per layer (replace)
Save
Open up Pictures folder
Search for βblueberry.gifβ
Double-click on blueberry
It does not move and itβs waaaaaay smallβ¦

hmmm, i honestly don't know? i do all of that and mine turn out okay? I use windows 7 and when I open up my icon they don't move... maybe try and upload it to deviantart (you don't have to upload it just have a look at what it looks like in the preview box) it may be they way your system views GIF files?

just click the top coloured square (default is black) and a box should come up giving multiple colour options c:

Hmm this shall come in handy, it's been ages since I did my last pixel animated icon, so this will be a great refresher. Plus I haven't used gimp for animating gifs either so it will be twice as handy.

i have been getting virus's on my pc and my mother doesnt want me to download anything that could possibly have a virus one more could shut down my pc for good.
