Description
CAUTION! STRONG LANGUAGE AND GORE! READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!!
The entire outpost was on lockdown. Clyde, Ben and Kim, the only remaining outpost members who had survived the attack, now held a rifle in their hands. McReady and Kate had hauled the dead corpse of the Anthony thing out of the room, only to set it ablaze once it was out. Night had fallen, and everyone was exhausted. But they knew the dangers of sleeping, that at any moment that creature would return and ambush them while they were unaware. Just to make matters worst, the night was painfully cold and wet. They could call it the worst night of their lives. They had lost everything: their leader, their friends, and now their home. Worst case scenario, they would be assimilated into one of those monstrosities and turn unwillingly against their comrades.
McReady and Kate stood outside, watching the Anthony thing burn. After what seemed like minutes, Kate spoke up. “Everything's gone to hell” she said, her voice quivered and depressed. She kicked the snow in front of her “If only my outpost hadn’t discovered that spaceship, if only we hadn’t unburied that creature, if only-” she was cut off by McReady, holding her shoulder “Don’t go hard on yourself” he said instructively “It’s not your fault that this happened, nor mine. Both our outposts did all they could to contain this thing.” he continued to say “But this is our last
stand, this is our last chance to stop this thing. We just need a little help” he said.
Kate chuckled a little bit “That’s actually the smartest thing I've heard you say”. McReady smiled, feeling more confident than he had a couple of moments ago. “Guys! I found a way to escape!” Childs said, running towards the group. Everyone looked at him, rushing towards childs as well. “Really! Do you know a way out of here?!” Clyde asked demandingly. Childs responded “Yes, I do. Listen, I was exploring the outpost when I came across a radio station. It’s somewhat in disrepair, but it can easily be fixed!” he explained.
“Are you sure?” Kim asked. Clyde responded “Yes, yes I’m sure! I once repaired that radio, it’s easy.” he said excitedly. “We can call in a rescue force!” Ben said “or better, the military” he added. McReady piped up “Don’t get all confident yet” he said “that thing is still here, hiding somewhere in the compartments of this outpost. It could strike at any moment”.
“Then we need a plan” Childs responded. “Clyde, how long do you think it will take you to repair that radio?” Childs asked. “Um, if I remember correctly about 15 or 20 minutes” he replied. “I remember that before our company sent us here they told us that the radio came equipped with an emergency signal that would call in special forces, in case this base was threatened or damaged, stuff like blizzards, avalanches or the icy floor breaking apart.” Everyone was surprised by this “I didn’t know we had the special forces on our side” Ben said. “Secret information” Clyde said “Boris was always a paranoid person, and he instructed me to keep it a secret until the time came” he said. “Well the time seems right to me” Kate said.
“W-well, it won’t be as simple as that” Clyde mumbled. “Why?” Childs asked. Clyde responded “W-well you s-see, in order for the radio to work it requires a transmitter, which we had until...these attacks. T-the transmitter and radio where connected via a cable, which as you can see” Clyde pointed to a hole in the wall, pouring with damaged and broken caples, sparks flying out “I-is now broken”
“Fuck!” McReady grouched. “B-but” Clyde interrupted “here is an emergency backup transmitter. It remains off but can be switched on if the main transmitter is damaged. Problem is, the radio and the second transmitter are on the opposite ends of the outpost. In order for the radio to work, someone would have to switch on the second transmitter first.”
“You 2” Childs said, pointing at Ben, Kim and Clyde. “You will accompany Clyde to the room where the radio is located. You will be armed to protect yourselves.” Childs gave Ben and Kim a rifle each. “Me, Childs and Kate will head towards the second transmitter. We will communicate via walkie talkie. If anything goes wrong, get the hell outta there and tell us through it” McReady said, handing Clyde a walkie talkie. He put a hand on Clyde’s shoulder “Good luck my friend.”
Soon enough the 2 parties parted ways. McReady’s party went downwards, while CLyde’s went upwards. “Do you think they’ll be alright?” Kate asked, concerned. “Don’t worry Kate” Childs said. “Yeah, I’m sure they’ll cope well” McReady said “They know what their doing”
“What are we doing?” Ben whispered into Kim’s ear. It hadn’t been long since his party departed from the safe area. “Didn’t you hear the orders” Kim asked, annoyed “They told us specifically to guard Clyde from that thing so we can get the radio fixed and get the fuck outta here. Seriously, don’t you hear orders from anything?” Ben chuckled a bit at this. Soon the party arrived at the room where the radio was located. There were 2 separate rooms, one to the left side of the corridor and the other to the right. “We will guard from outside” Ben said, giving Clyde a thumbs up. Clyde nodded and entered the room, switching on the flashlight he was carrying with him. The door behind him was shut a bit, just enough so a small ray of light was shining through. Soon enough, there it was. A radio, with a couple of dentures, unscrewed bolts and a few loose wires standing on a snowy desk. “Finally” Clyde muttered under his breath. He began work on the radio instantly.
Meanwhile, McReady’s party was still searching for the backup transmitter room. “This place is like a maze” Child's remarked “God knows how they’re able to find anything”. They continued searching, going down corridor by corridor, opening door by door, until they finally found the room. It was a pretty large room, with lights by the side of the walls and cables scattered around the floor. In the middle of the room laid a somewhat large radio antenna, resembling that of a miniature radio tower. It was surrounded by a control panel, abundant with buttons, switches and dial knobs. “This is not going to be easy” Kate said “Couldn’t agree more” McReady responded.
Back with Ben and Kim, they were still guarding the door. Ben looked at kim “I don’t trust McReady” he said o kim. Kim looked surprised “Seriously? After all he’s done for us you're still onto him? He’s the only reason we’re alive” he said angrily. Ben sighed “I understand, but look at him in a different light. We don’t know what happened to him in his outpost. We don't know how he knows these things about it. What if he is secretly one of them” he said. Kim grimaced “You're full of shit man.” Suddenly the door in front of them creaked open a bit, and a strange, hissing noise came from within the room. Ben and Kim raised their weapons, ready to fire. Nothing happened. “I’ll go check” Ben said “Stay here”. Kim nodded as Ben slowly opened the door and entered the room, gun raised. For many minutes nothing happened. Then Ben spoke up. “Kim, come look at this, now!” Ben said in a loud enough voice for only Kim to hear. Kim entered the room, and saw Ben looking down at something. As Kim got closer he saw what is was: Nothing.
“The fuck man, is this some sort of joke” Kim said irritated. Ben chuckled “No. this is not a joke. This is your FUNERAL” He said, voice becoming distorted. Kim’s eyes widened and as he tried to scream, Ben covered his mouth. Suddenly Kim was pinned onto the floor, Ben’s body pressing against his. Kim could feel Ben’s body begin to slowly melt and fuse onto his, and the more he tried to scream the more the hand presses against his mouth. Then he felt it:
Tentacles digging into the back of his head. He felt them dig into his flesh, trying to reach the insides of his head. His vision was becoming hazy, but he continued screaming. He felt them slither against his brain, up his air vents and through his throat. Then, he stopped screaming, as several red tentacles pushed their way through his mouth, his nose, his eyes.
