NOTE: This deviation is a little outdated. You can now download "DarlingMionette's SAI Resources" at the bottom of the Custom Brush Supplement.
It is a .zip file of all my brush settings, textures, blank do-it-yourself resources, instructions for creating custom content, and associated start-sai.exe file that lets you register these files to your SAI without editing the .conf files manually :3 All in one convenient place. All of my current brush settings have been updated to match the files in the .zip file, and contain image examples for each. Be sure to read the README's! Okay I have a problem here...
Your tutorial is really helpful and making new brushes could become another hobby
BUT it is really annoying that my new brushes I create are not safed!! >_<
Maybe I am just overseeing something really really obvious but I'm at my wits end here

i know this is late and whateves but when you make a new brush and you want to close out instead of clicking the actual exit button go over to file and click exit from there then it will automatically save them.

Can I ask something?Β
If I want to make a new pencil with custom settings, the size of the new tool is maximum 10.0?
Is this normal? Or is there even a way making the maximum size 100.0?
π: 0 β©: 1
hamtro1 In reply to dwwn [2014-03-24 22:26:02 +0000 UTC]
If you use Ctrl + Alt, you can drag the brush to any size you want Minimum being 1 px, max being 500 px. Or you can use the brush size buttons. They are under your bursh settings, if you can not see them try making the brush selection box smaller, or minimizing the advanced setting

How do you make a square brush? One where, you can dab and the brush result are these little square dabs (like a paintbrush)? AA bit different from setting Min Size to 100 ...

right click the file and go to properties, make sure it's not read-only. if it's not, then check the folder you have it in and make sure that's not read-only. the error is a permission issue that has to do with your computer's filesystem and the rites you have to access it, not a sai problem specifically

Not sure if you've answered this before somewhere but I'm curious what canvas size you use when you do your CG's. I've downloaded and installed and made most of your custom brushes but some of them don't seem to work right for me, like the pressure sensitivity seems to be a bit wonky. They'll draw super light and be practically invisible unless I zoom but if I but a bit of pressure down they become super dark and much wider. I can only imagine that it's because my canvas may be bigger than what you used? I use 3000 x 3000 pixel at 300dpi, but I hardly know what I'm doing when it comes to canvas size so if you've got a better suggestion I'm all for it x3Β

DarlingMionette In reply to IsshuinHatume [2014-01-12 14:05:06 +0000 UTC]
I genereally use 1500 x 1500 for my canvases at 300dpi that shouldn't make too much of a difference with the brushes themselves. However, different tablets will have different pressure sensitivities, so it may be that you need to adjust the pressure sensitivity of your brushes to match your particular tablet a little better. I have a wacom Intuos 4 M, but depending on brand or even the size/quality of your tablet, it'll have different pressure sensitivity levels than mine does - and may even just be set up differently than mine even if you have the same tablet exactly.

Ahh, that makes sense x3 I have a Wacom Bamboo Capture so it's a teeny tiny tab. Thanks for the response and thanks for the brushes! When I get them to work properly i'm sure they'll look great ^.^

For some reason the Sai I have does not have the "do-it-yourself" folder, do you know why this is? I have been wanting to make the tools with the pointy edge not the default blocky looking edge so I am just plain stuck .n.
π: 0 β©: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to HidansReaper [2014-01-06 03:18:32 +0000 UTC]
A) the do-it-yourself folder comes in the download in my custom brush supplement, not all versions of sai come with it, so you can find it there. B) try lowering the min size of your brush to a lower setting, and be sure to use a pressure-sensitive tablet/stylus. if you're using a mouse, you'll have to adjust your pen size while drawing to get the same effect of the tapering line

hello, I have a question
is there any possible way you could make a custom brush where it makes a square? sorry I'm bad at explaining things
but I'm trying to figure out way's I can just make a shape tool instead of continuously going from program to program for my comics
DarlingMionette In reply to MENOVlNE [2013-12-11 05:05:27 +0000 UTC]
There are ways, yes. If you make an actual square brushform and you're really careful with the way you use it (clicking instead of dragging) it should work just fine as a particular shape... just make sure it has a sharp nib in the settings to keep the edge from blurring when you adjust the brush size

Unfortunately I'm not sure how much I can help since English isn't your first language... I don't speak spanish, but my best suggestions is to copy the instructions into Google Translate, just as I did with this message. It won't be perfect, but it'll be a little easier to understand.

why?
help thanks!

that usually happens when you have a missing .dll (or one that went corrupt) if you reinstall it should save brushes again

there's a certain detail in the .bmp file in brushtexture-making process, while you've said that it should be grayscale, at least in photoshoop it should actually be in grayscale image mode "Image>Mode>Grayscale", 'cause some people might just understand that its just without colors when there's actually the mode to "tag" the .BMP as grayscale. intricate little bugger took me an hour to realize what made mine didn't work even naming it to working ones(they're oddly in Index mode though, but it also works to save greyscaled in Index mode).
sadly Vista/7 MSPaint can't save as grayscale-tagged BMP, nor does SAI itself, in case anyone was looking for just the legal way to do it without PS, idk about GIMP.
