NOTE: This deviation is a little outdated. You can now download "DarlingMionette's SAI Resources" at the bottom of the Custom Brush Supplement.
It is a .zip file of all my brush settings, textures, blank do-it-yourself resources, instructions for creating custom content, and associated start-sai.exe file that lets you register these files to your SAI without editing the .conf files manually :3 All in one convenient place. All of my current brush settings have been updated to match the files in the .zip file, and contain image examples for each. Be sure to read the README's! Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.
This has been the most helpful Sai tutorial I've ever come across. That last bit about pressing the start-sai button instead of sai.exe has helped me a TON. Omg, you have no idea. I was forever downloading brushes before and I couldn't figure out how to get them installed in Sai. I was copy and pasting them into the Sai directly, but that would only let me download one brush set. I pressed the start-sai button and BAM, every brush I'd every installed was in Sai at the same time. Finally! I wish I could hug you right now. You just saved my life.

How did you make the twelfth brush in your list of brushes you've made? the one that looks kind of like watery ink?

how do I get the brush to have a point ( that makes it look like fur) sorta how it looks in the first pencil example pic?

DarlingMionette In reply to MidnightsBloom [2013-02-19 04:56:57 +0000 UTC]
have a tablet. adjust the minimum size to 0 on your brush and it should allow you to draw with a point :3

Sooooooo, you NEED a tablet?

DarlingMionette In reply to MidnightsBloom [2013-02-19 05:01:32 +0000 UTC]
for the point yes XD that's just a given. you can continually adjust your brush size to replicate the look but it's a ton more work

MidnightsBloom In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-02-19 05:05:58 +0000 UTC]
Is there anyway do you think you could provide a screen shot on how to replicate it?(its okay if you don't have the time too, but it took forever to download today and now I finally using it for the first time ^^)

DarlingMionette In reply to MidnightsBloom [2013-02-19 15:33:01 +0000 UTC]
unfortunately it's not really something I can teach XD without a tablet it's a lot more work.. you'd have to constantly change the brush size mid-stroke

hello , great tutorial , its very nice of you to put so much effort and time into helping others. Id like to ask , is there a way to create brushes that are infact images like a brush for chains or a brush for teeth. This is done easily in photoshop but i havent figured out if i can do it in sai. Thanks in advance
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to KKylimos [2013-02-10 01:28:23 +0000 UTC]
you can to an extent, but not in the same way as adobe photoshop. you can create new brush shapes and create a custom brush with them, but it has to be .bmp with no gradients in it and it won't be able to follow a set path and link up like you can make photoshop brushes do.

XD it should be on the same panel as your color wheel / palette show up when they're enabled. looks like a big box filled with smaller boxes... has your standard pen, brush, an watercol brushes in it.

it says "Open up the "Mio's Brush Settings" folder (contained within this .zip). Inisde you will find screenshots of all my brush settings. To create these brushes, you need to right click any blank square in your brush menu to create a new brush, and then edit the settings to match those you see in the screenshot. BRUSHES ARE NOT CREATED AUTOMATICALLY. YOU HAVE TO DO THIS MANUALLY." can you please explain more thoroughly

DarlingMionette In reply to Yukari1814 [2013-02-08 14:50:24 +0000 UTC]
ah. you need to find the brush menu (where pen, brush, watercol etc are located) find a blank box, and right click on it. a menu will pop up with a list of brush types. Pick one that matches the icon shown in the screenshot for whatever brush you want to make - (brush = paintbrush, airbrush looks like an airbrush, watercolor looks like a paintbrush with a drop of water next to it, etc) this will create a standard brush. From there you just adjust the brush settings of the brush (they'll pop up below the brush menu) to match those shown in the screenshot. so if the screenshot shows the density as 50.. you change the brush settings to Density 50. XD it's pretty straight forward.

I have a question. I made brushes and followed the Read me, and I closed sai when I went to bed and opened it again but all my costom brushes disappeared! Help?

DarlingMionette In reply to Timerifts [2013-01-30 01:54:06 +0000 UTC]
you have a .dll problem most likely. sometimes sai can have a .dll go corrupt or missing (particularly the one that saves settings), in which case no matter how many times you open and close the program, it will constantly delete your brushes. the best thing to do is to reinstall sai. this should fix the missing/corrupt .dll and it'll work after that ^^

Timerifts In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-01-30 01:55:40 +0000 UTC]
But I had just reinstalled before I did the brushes. But I will do :3 What if that doesn't work though?

DarlingMionette In reply to Timerifts [2013-01-30 02:36:55 +0000 UTC]
make sure you did a reboot of your comp after you reinstalled and before you re-created the brushes in sai... sometimes settings won't save otherwise, but other than that... reinstalling is the only way I know of how to fix it without having to rebuild your brushes each time :/
