Description Wheeeeeee another tutorial This time on custom brushes in SAI! <3 I love custom brushes. It was getting so long that I tourniquet'd my custom brush settings off of it >.> But if anyone sees a brush exampled up there that you'd like, just ask and I'll copy the stats for you

ENGLISH SAI: [link]
Official Website: [link]

SAI costs approximately $56 USD (5250 Japanese Yen) for a license. Trials last 31 days. Check the exchange rates on your currency - they change daily so it can fluctuate up and down.

[link] <- Custom Brush Suppliment Tutorial. Has all my brush settings.

NOTE: This deviation is a little outdated. You can now download "DarlingMionette's SAI Resources" at the bottom of the Custom Brush Supplement.

It is a .zip file of all my brush settings, textures, blank do-it-yourself resources, instructions for creating custom content, and associated start-sai.exe file that lets you register these files to your SAI without editing the .conf files manually :3 All in one convenient place. All of my current brush settings have been updated to match the files in the .zip file, and contain image examples for each. Be sure to read the README's! If you like it, then drop me a +fav on this deviation . Thanks!

My watercolor textures are not showing up, would you know how to fix this?

read the readme ^^ there are instructions for missing textures

I have tried doing that, it still doesn't show.

DarlingMionette In reply to LilKilala [2013-01-15 14:13:06 +0000 UTC]

is it all the textures, or just that one? if it's all: make sure you installed and ran start-sai.exe correctly. if it's one: check how many textures / brush shape syou have. sai has a limit to how many it can handle, and after a certain point it will simply stop loading some of them. it's very finnicky -_-

LilKilala In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-01-16 23:56:11 +0000 UTC]

Hmm well I did try taking some brushes and textures out to see if it shows up but still a no show.....seems my sai is my finicky than others fhojfesj. Its just the two different types of watercolor textures.

This is a great tutorial i was wondering if there was a "flow setting" just like in photoshop?

DarlingMionette In reply to diamondhart [2012-12-29 09:20:47 +0000 UTC]

nope, no flow setting in sai, but I haven't found a reason yet to need one XD

I honestly don't know what to tell you, SAI wasn't originally intended for the mac, and I've only met two people to ever get it to work on one - I can't really tell you alternate instructions for it as I'm not familiar with the system

I really appreciate this. Creating a fur brush will help me save so many hours. I struggled with figuring out where the new brush was when I had reopened sai. I was expecting it to show in the chart with the rest of the icons. However its in the drop down menu(where the simple circle is). other than that, great tutorial!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to NitelyHallow [2012-12-19 03:45:19 +0000 UTC]

XD that's because it's not a brush, that would be a brush shape, two different things. brushshapes are used to make custom brushes and only show up in the drop downs. a real brush would be in the brush menu (because you'd put it there).

it may be that you have a different version of sai than I do, I've heard there's some differences not only between the versions, but between the languages as well

I really love your brushes!
I just have one problem.. Whenever I close sai, my brush settings won't save I have no idea what i'm doing wrong,
I hope you can help!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to cheese-drop [2012-11-29 16:33:48 +0000 UTC]

try a good reboot of your system - sometimes sai is finicky and has problems loading it's own preferences, if that doesnt work, you may need to reinstall - it's possible the .dll used to register and save brushes may have gone corrupt, and therefore won't save your settings.

LadyRin65 In reply to ??? [2012-11-23 17:51:40 +0000 UTC]

I have a question. o u o I made my own custom brush but when I closed off Easy Paint Tool SAI and opened it again a few minutes later, the custom brush wasn't there. How did that happen and what can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to LadyRin65 [2012-11-23 18:53:56 +0000 UTC]

that's usually caused by a .dll problem (unless you're running the trial version) in which case a reinstall will replace the missing/corrupt dll. sai is supposed to automatically save your brushes for you when it's working properly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyRin65 In reply to DarlingMionette [2012-11-29 01:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh, okay. Well, I wasn't able to re-install the program in the past few days because I was rather busy with other things, but when I opened it up today, the brushes were there. o u o Do you know why they came back just like that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to LadyRin65 [2012-11-29 01:39:25 +0000 UTC]

sai is notorious for being glitchy XD sometimes it just has loading errors

haiiorca In reply to ??? [2012-11-19 19:54:06 +0000 UTC]

Good tutorial, but I have one question: Is there a way to save just numeric brush settings and such (I.E. if I start with the basic brush tool then save all the settings, could I save that, change the settings to something esle, then revert back to the ones saved?) I don't understand Sai all that well, in fact I can't even really figure out how to make a new brush to start with.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to haiiorca [2012-11-19 21:44:05 +0000 UTC]

there's an option if you right click a brush to "duplicate" brushes. This is the best way to do what you're aiming for.. if you get a brush setting you really like, or you want to create a new brush based off something you already had, just duplicate it, and then change one of the copies ^^ that way you can keep both.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

haiiorca In reply to DarlingMionette [2012-11-19 21:54:49 +0000 UTC]

wow, a really neat and nice explanation of the brush settings!
i only tried sai once yet and (since i was used to PS) was quite confused x)

but since iΒ΄m considering to work with it more regularly, this is just what i needed to spare me hours and hours of playing round to find out stuff (tho thereΒ΄s still plenty playing left, yay )

soooo thanks a lot!
