Description Wheeeeeee another tutorial This time on custom brushes in SAI! <3 I love custom brushes. It was getting so long that I tourniquet'd my custom brush settings off of it >.> But if anyone sees a brush exampled up there that you'd like, just ask and I'll copy the stats for you

ENGLISH SAI: [link]
Official Website: [link]

SAI costs approximately $56 USD (5250 Japanese Yen) for a license. Trials last 31 days. Check the exchange rates on your currency - they change daily so it can fluctuate up and down.

===========================================
NOTE: This deviation is a little outdated. You can now download "DarlingMionette's SAI Resources" at the bottom of the Custom Brush Supplement.

It is a .zip file of all my brush settings, textures, blank do-it-yourself resources, instructions for creating custom content, and associated start-sai.exe file that lets you register these files to your SAI without editing the .conf files manually :3 All in one convenient place. All of my current brush settings have been updated to match the files in the .zip file, and contain image examples for each. Be sure to read the README's! If you like it, then drop me a +fav on this deviation . Thanks!

it doesn't come with all versions of sai, just move the folder over from the zip ^^ it won't mess anything up.

This looks amazing! Forgive me though but I am really confused. I tried installing everything the way you described and used the start-sai.exe. The textures and brush tips are loaded fine but I don't see the brushes in the brushes menu. Should I be seeing your custom brushes there in the brushes menu or do I need to actually create them myself? I know you have your brush settings on here too but I figured those were the settings you use for the brushes once installed?

The brushes (as stated in the description.. no worries, everyone somehow misses this part) must be entered manually :3 There are screenshots in the "Mio's Brush Settings" Folder for you to copy over the settings :3

This is most helpful in making custom brushes, but I have a question. Would you be able to somewhere put up a picture of the 'Middle Flat' brush?? For some reason, my version of SAI doesn't include it at all, so I'm trying to just recreate it using the brush template here...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DarlingMionette In reply to IridiumFlames [2012-01-28 18:28:42 +0000 UTC]

it should come in the zip file ^^ labeled "middle flat em 1" found in the elemap folder ^^

Thank you sooooooooo much for making this tutorial!! I've got a strange query though, my tablet seems to not recognize any pen sensitivity. I downloaded the tablet drivers, I set the Min Size to zero, and it's still flat and not tapering away. Any suggestions?

kjsbear In reply to BlondieLizard [2012-01-09 18:48:52 +0000 UTC]

I had the same problem when I switched tablets, and I found out that if the old driver is still there the pen pressure won't work for the new tablet ಠ_ಠ
Also there are tablet settings already on your computer if you search tablet PC settings, and go to other you should find some other things to customiza n .n unless you have a mac, idk
hope that was relevant!

argh.. I'm trying to remember.. there's actually a setting you can get into to reset your pen to fix that problem, for the life of me I can't remember where it's found. google? LOL I wish I could be more help D: also: reboot your computer, try unplugging/replugging in your tablet, and make sure your tablet is plugged in BEFORE you open your paint program.

I don't normally comment on pictures, but I can't help but notice the brush next to the bottom right corner. The thinner line that doesn't look like it's meshing. Is there any way I could get that from you? It's rather pretty @_@. (in the unlabeled sectioned) Otherwise I really liked your explanation of this subject. God knows I would end up committing bloody murder trying to get the brush I wanted '-';. Have a nice New Years!

DarlingMionette In reply to AzulishBoom [2012-01-03 02:10:35 +0000 UTC]

XD you'll have to be a bit more specific - i'm not sure which brush you were talking about XD does it have any written text next to it? what paragraph of the tutorial is it by?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AzulishBoom In reply to DarlingMionette [2012-01-03 02:24:47 +0000 UTC]

Below the text "Below are some of the brushes I've created custom for SAI" Go to the bottom right corner, and the (marker?) brush directly next to the splotchy one in the bottom right corner. Dunno if I can really get more specific anymore And maybe the pretty marker (maybe copic? o_O I have nooo idea.) two rows directly above it? The ones where the overlap are darker than the regular.

DarlingMionette In reply to AzulishBoom [2012-01-09 16:44:35 +0000 UTC]

hrm. I dont think I have that one anymore XD I got rid of a lot of my not-so-favorite brushes and compiled the ones I liked into a brush suppliment (link in the bottom of the description)

i have a tiny problem.. like.. i have two folders with SAI.. and both of them work, but i only bought it once.. i think one of them is a copy from some time ago, but that stopped working.. one of them has the normal names "clipping group" and so and one have "layer clip" and those other names.. but none of them have the "do it yourself" thingey :L

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to FresiaX [2011-12-26 17:02:09 +0000 UTC]

It probably doesn't matter which one you use, but if you want to get rid of the second one, i'd uninstall both and reinstall with your .exe and keep the new install XD that way you at least know you have the correct up-to-date version. The do-it-yourself folder isn't installed automatically with the newer versions of sai, you just have to drag the folder over from the .zip or create it yourself :3 it has no direct impact on your program.

Laitma In reply to ??? [2011-12-19 04:00:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for this tutorial, it's fantastic!

I have a question for you though--I've read through your file and I've played around with SAI a lot, but what I'm having trouble with is transparency. I'm looking for an option actually similar to much more basic drawing programs like Oekaki's pencil tool or Tegaki, where the transparency allows you to overlap it to gradually build up darker values. Sorry, I hope that what I'm saying here is making sense... @v@;;

But well, as I know of it, in SAI if I lower the "Density" slider, it just makes it so that the MAX density is at the value I set it to, and I can't make it any darker!
Anyway, I was wondering if you had any tips/help for this problem? Is it my version of SAI? (I think I might have an older version, 1.1...?)
I noticed that your custom brush sample, the third one from the end of the last row, looks a little like what I'm looking for. How did you get the opacity to overlap there?

Anyway, hope I'm not being a bother, and very sorry if I've missed an explanation of this somewhere, but right now this problem is just driving me nuts and I can't figure out how to get SAI to work for me, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much for all your hard work and wonderful tutorials!

DarlingMionette In reply to Laitma [2012-01-28 19:23:16 +0000 UTC]

I messed around with my settings a bit - you need to have the "Density" slider low, but also check under the advanced options and make sure min/max densities are set appropriately. It may also depend on the type of brush you're creating. I was working with a regular paint brush and it seemed to work fine, but it may not work the same with a watercolor or marker.Other things, like the blending settings and dilution settings will also have an effect - you just got to play around a bit ^^ also, are you using a pen tablet? if you don't have pressure sensitivity the brushes won't work the same way as if you do.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Laitma In reply to DarlingMionette [2012-01-30 16:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, I'm using a tablet. I kind of figured it out a bit with the density sliders, but it'll take some more fiddling around with to get it where I want it to be, hah.
Still, thanks for the help!
