depends what you want to learn XD, but the complicated answer is: everything! do something different every time you draw it'll increase your over-all skill at drawing as opposed to one specialized area, until one day you realize, you can draw anything! two of the biggies i'd say, are hair and clothes.. if you can get down their gravity and lines structures, it'll help you with just about everything else :3

Thanks, I guess that is the best way, I'll just keep practicing x)

it also helps to look around DA a lot. if you aren't sure what you want your style to turn out like, take a day and look through the galleries.. take note of the artists you like, and what about their art you like the most.. by the end of the day you'll have a pretty clear picture of the type of styles you like the most - then you can start practicing them. For instance, I learned that I like big pouty lips, and very realistic-roundish eyes. I also like really heart-shaped faces, and thin, but not too-thin bodies on my characters.. so, I practiced drawing those things It gives you a direction to work towards, and eventually you start to develop a style of your own based on those things you like (and there's less chance of changing your mind about your style later XD) same goes for coloring styles.. take a look at soft-cell, hard-cell, paintery, or airbrushed styles, with and without lines.. figure out your favorite method, and start practicing it
... rather than emulating a set "style" you'll come out with something that's all your own in the end :3

I love your tutorial! It's so simple and clear
I need some help though. I'm having some trouble with the pressure sensitivity. I'm not sure if it's SAI, my computer, or my tablet. I downloaded the newest drives, gone through all the settings for my pen and tablet in the control panel. It seems to work for the tablet input panel, but not for SAI...I have no idea how to fix this and it's driving me insane. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me

I just had the EXACT same problem. I'm not entirely sure how I fixed it, but I eventually did. I did this: 1. uninstall/reinstall your tablet drivers. If you have an older wacom like a graphire, you might need to go back to an older driver version, the latest one reportedly doesn't work well with them. 2. Close out SAI. 3. go to: C:\Program Files\Tablet\Pen\PrefUtil.exe run it and click Remove under "All User Preferences" 4. Run SAI and see if it fixed it. If it doesn't, close out of sai again and in the same folder as the PrefUtil.exe, make sure you're running Pen_TabletUser and Pen_Tablet, then reopen SAI again. it should work. Those are all the steps I went through and I finally got it working again XD
probably all you need to do is a) close out sai, b) run the PrefUtil.exe and remove the user preferences, c) reopen sai. But if that doesnt work, try it as above XD

check to make sure you have your pen drivers. you should be able to download them if you search up your tablet on the net. install, then reboot your computer. (and of course make sure it's plugged in XD)

Hi Cary! I finally jumped on the bandwagon and got sai so far I loooooooooooooove it, but I have one problem: the eraser tool doesn't have a min-size option! it erases at max size, and makes huge round edges out of the lines. Is there any way to fix it, or is this the way the eraser always is? ;-;
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DarlingMionette In reply to Everyday-Grind-Comic [2010-10-07 12:59:54 +0000 UTC]
no, that's not alwasy the way the eraser is XD the min size option should be right under the size bar, if yours doesnt have it, right click an empty space on your brush menu and go to Eraser. that should create a new one, and it should have the min size option. if you want to make the edges less sharp and more airbrushy, you can change the density to lower the opacity OR use the Edge Hardness and min density / hard <-> soft options under the advanced settings (click the checkbox at the bottom of the brush settings menu to see the options)
