Description So, I randomly started drawing Sora and it was turning out pretty well, so I figured, 'hey, let's finish it!'
...Then I discovered what I'd got myself in for. Sora's character design is freaking complicated. Nomura seems intent on making more and more complicated characters.
But I finished the drawing, inked and coloured it anyway. It was pretty fun to do.

Time taken: WAY TOO LONG.

HALF OF THE COMPLICATION IS THE MEANINGLESS ZIPPERS. XD

I luff it. ^_^ Yaaay Sora.

I think the meaningless belts look more problematic personally. It's the ones around his hips that have no visible means to fasten or unfasten that worry me hahaha.

Nothing wrong with overly complex character designs, unless you have to draw them frequently, heh.
Good fanart, but I was never a big KH fan. I just didn't like the blatant shoehorning of popular Final Fantasy characters into a clearly Disney setting- it could've worked just as well without any of them. (Though, you know, I was always a fan of Sephiroth's battle prowess being reflected in his supposedly ridiculous difficulty to defeat in KH2... hehe...)

The thing about Kingdom Hearts is that it's really two different games which have unwittingly collided and got stuck. On one hand it's a Disney adventure where you play interactive versions of classic children's films.
On the other hand it's a Square-Enix action RPG about a boy called Sora fighting monsters and looking for his friends with a few Squaresoft Cameos.
The thing is, most KH fans will agree, they play through the Disney bits just to continue with the non-Disney bits. There are a decent number of Non-Disney areas (Destiny Islands, Traverse Town, Twilight Town, Hollow Bastion, The World That Never Was) and characters (Sora, Riku, Kairi, Ansem, Organisation 13, Roxas) and these are original to KH and the most memorable things about the game. I've never seen it as 'FF shoehorned into Disney' quite the opposite, I see it as a really good action RPG like 'Secret of Mana' which inexplicably has had Disney stuff stuck into it. All my KH playing friends agree, they would love to play a Kingdom Hearts game with all the original and FF characters but none of the Disney.

I suppose, but it might just me being picky about RPGs. I haven't really *enjoyed* an RPG (at least, not by Squaresoft) since FF6 and FF7, and then they started going downhill. I'm kind of an old fogey in that I still prefer their ATB turn-based system to all this "moving around and selecting enemies on the fly" crap, lol. Granted, KH had the potential to be a good game- certainly, a lot of people thought it was- but it never really thrilled me and just came off seeming gimmicky. *shrug*

Hmmm...Well, the thing is, as somebody who wants to go into games design myself (I'm doing a Masters' course in it this year) I try to view games with a critical eye, much as I would a comic, and Kingdom Hearts II is a solid piece of work, it has good graphics, a solid plotline, enjoyable gameplay, decent music...the works, it's not like 'omg best game evar!' but it's just nicely made and doesn't have bad balance issues or bugs or massive loading times.
It's an interesting exercise, thinking of a game from a critical angle, and it often helps avoid the pitfalls of judging a game on rose-tinted nostalgia or jaded old-skool prejudice. From a personal standpoint, I love FF8 to bits, I've even cosplayed Selphie (there's a photo of that if you go back far enough in my gallery) but from a critical perspective, it has some dreadful gameplay flaws and bits of the plot are nonsensical, so I'm aware that my love of FF8 is slightly irrational and probably based on the fact it was my first console RPG and the characters and setting appeal to me personally.
Next time you're not enjoying a game, try to work out what it is you're not enjoying about it, and think about whether you're being unjustly prejudiced toward something that's actually good. You may be surprised. Some games really are just bad games *coughenterthematrixcough* but some deserve to be played before they're judged.

I suppose I could always do that.

Personally, I liked Path of Neo a lot more than Enter the Matrix, heh...

Kate, this is the first bit of KH fanart I have seen that actually makes me sort of want to play the game. (I live under a gaming rock, haha.) That is just how cool this looks!

Thank you ^_^ A lot of KH fanart is a bit cutesy or shounen-ai or teen angsty for my tastes, so I drew Sora as I see him, a total badass who shows in game that he can beat up Cloud and Squall at the same freaking time! 0_o;
The Kingdom Hearts games are both excellent and I'd recommend them, especially since you don't have any bias against Disney (people who dislike Disney have trouble playing them. Personally I think running around with Mulan in your party yelling "FOR CHINAAA!" and hitting monsters with a giant key is entertainment at its finest).
