Description
A piece I did inspired by Greek mythology. The god of war, Ares, challenged Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom, to a fight. So Ares comes charging all macho and "This. is. Sparta! Raaagh!"
...So Athena threw a rock at him and he went down. Ooh, PWNED! She threw the rock so hard that the guy actually disintegrated! (he got better later. Being a god and all) and she just stood there watching him disintigrate, like 'yeah, you don't mess with Athena, this is Athens, fool!"
Greek Mythology is awesome.
The pencils were done on regular printer paper with an hb 0.5 mechanical pencil. Inking was done in Manga Studio Debut, and colours with Photoshop. Time taken about 5 hours.

Oh huh, interesting! Well, I'm hardly an expert! But as far as I'd seen historically Athena was patron of Athens (it's even named after her) while Ares was patron of their rivals, Sparta. Hence the title.

And in the far off distance...
(Zeus): Making another bastard.
(Poisiden): Punching whales.
(Dionysus): Drunk off his *** and rapping his way across Naples.
(Hera): Getting ready to castrate Zeus.
(Apollo): Diddling a sheep in Dacia.
(Artemis): Killing things for practice and wondering how she`s related to these idiots.

Hahahaha. That makes it sound like an amazing setup for a comic! I love how dysfunctional the Greek/Roman pantheon are.

Athena: (smirking) Bet you're not gonna do that again, are you? Now get up.....and QUIT BEING A WUSSY!
Ares: (narrating) From that day I learned something important in life......never challenge your sister to a fistfight. (sobs) She cheated, I wan't ready! Stop laughing at me.

Hahaha. Admittedly he challenged her to a spears and shields fight and she threw a rock at him. Never challenge Athena to anything; you'll always come off worse.

Ares: I thought she was lazy, turned out she was just resting up. Heard the same thing from her again (imitating Athena) "Better quit being a wussy!"

That's because Ares is a coward, whereas Athena was ALWAYS a true warrior. Intelligent, cunning, and actually brave. Ares was known for running as soon as he got hurt.
Awesoem artwork, love her hair and her eyes the most (though the entirety of your Athena is bloody awesome).

Thank you. This is kind of an old piece now, but it was definitely the best thing I'd done when I created it. I think it still stands up as one of my favourite pieces I've done.
The comments have been fascinating too, lots of knowledgeable mythology buffs!

Well, going by this myth Athena pwned Ares. It also has to be considered that Athens still exists in modern day Greece, while Sparta is just a load of ruins!

Actually Athena may have been the most important deity--or goddess--in Sparta. Socrates & Plato of Athens liked Sparta.

Now that I think about it the Spartans probably also thought Athena's father and his wife were important. I suppose the Spartan leaders wanted just wars but some of the practices of Sparta were not very tolerant--but neither is much of modern Earth. I just mentioned the philosophers because Athena was probably also most important to them next to the King & Queen of the gods (of course one might want to check if the Titans or Protogenoi were important.) I guess I got off-topic, but the point is if the god Ares was worshipped much in Sparta he had to have been only one of several, and Spartans were human too.
I like the picture--is it a scene from the Iliad? I have read it but do not recall. I know Athena did something like that to Ares.... This picture by another member quotes part of the scene: [link] . He is pretty enthusiastic about it and so am I... I will have some Athena art here later.

Err, I don't believe it's from the Illiad, I just found it on a site about Greek mythology.
As you can tell from my gallery, I'm not actually a habitual mythology artist, just an English Lit degree who draws manga and felt inspired by a story from mythology.

Cooool, I didn't know you'd done any mythology pictures, let alone one of owl-eyed Athene *classics dance!*
The attention to detail is amazing, as is the design of their clothes and armour. And I love how her eyes seem to say 'Now CALM THE HELL DOWN.' XD You've captured her Iliadic character very well

Majestic. Very faithful to the literary record too, seeing as Pallas regularly humbled Gravidus in the Ilias.
I can speak no ill of this composition, as the coloring and shading seem as good as any digital composition I've ever seen. Perhaps my only regret would be that her chiton, while beautifully draped, obscures her armor.

Wow, comment and a half! Excellent!
I'm glad the mythology buffs are pleased with this picture, since I did a fair bit of research, hoping I wouldn't mess up too badly!
It is kind of a shame her armour is obscured, but on the other hand, I decided her Aegis was the more important part of her design.
Thanks very much for the in-depth comment.

No problem. If you do ever decide to do another Athena piece, do send me a message or something. I'd love to see it.
You've prompted me to do another read-through of the epic, so I have to thank you for that.

I hate to reply my own comment, but I just now noticed the lightning bolts on the chiton. Books VIII and V of the Ilias show her shedding her peplos in favor of her battle armor and Zeus's war shirt, after all. Very fine attention to detail--it almost erases my regret. Well done.

Hey ^^ Nice work here, I really like the understated composition, it makes the character expressions and body language really jump out and focuses you in on them.
For some reason this strikes me as something that'd make a good CD cover xD.
Btw, tried to fave this but I'm on my folks' PC and it doesn't like DA, so if it hasn't faved, give me a shout and I'll swing back and fave it xD.
