Description Yeah, this week I got FF13 and I'm really loving it, hehe. Lightning is my favourite character, so for my digital painting practice, I figured I'd try to draw Light.
Man, digital painting is haaaaard! Gonna work hard at it to improve! *airpunch*

Excellent piece, by all means your digital painting skills rock! Top notch, I like how you coloured her hair crimson like her original concept, opposed to the lighter/grayer hair she has in the actual game.

Lightning is among the coolest Final Fantasy protagonists. Finally! Looking back at the series latest entries; FFIX featured Zidane, a small thief with a monkey tail. FFX had the unstop whining of Tidus. FFXII... Don't get me started on how much is wrong with Vaan.
But Lightning kicks ass, the fact that she also has a gun-blade for a weapon just adds to her coolness factor.

Haha, the hair thing was really an accident. I did quite like Light's original concept, where she was more masculine looking and with darker hair, but I kind of like the more elegant and feminine look she has in the game, so I don't mind too much.

I'm happy to see a more serious protagonist after Zidane's complete lack of development and Tidus' general airheadedness (though he did develop into a cooler guy later in the game at least) and Vaan....urgh...Vaan being the most annoying guy ever. It's also refreshing for me as a female player to see a really interesting and complex female protagonist.

Lightning! Snazztastic! >w<"
Loving the pastel-y colours, especially in the hair with all of the different shades~ contrasts nicely with Lightning's glare.

Haha, thanks! I think Light is an interesting character in appearance and nature because of her contrast between soft and hard, her hair is particularly distinctive and one of my favourite things about the character.

You're welcome! Still haven't played the game yet (except for once where I walked in on a pal riding a Chocobo, which they showed me how to do after running away from a HUGE four legged creature, thankfully it's slow!); but you get that contrast-y feel from your drawing. ^o^

Ah man! I just got to that area! It's terrifying! It's huge and some of the monsters are strong enough to just stomp on you when you first get there. So far, it's really fun, and I'd rank it fairly high in the FF series personally ^_^

Haha I knew it! We get Mongoose FFXIII fanart!

I always wondered what it would look like if you started digitally painting-- now that I know I'm going to say that you should do lots of it, digipainting and your style go really well together IMO! (I think all that anatomical knowledge that you have gets to be a lot more visible when you paint it than when you do lineart, too, haha. I thought I was getting okay at anatomy until I started inking figures and realized how much 'invisible' knowledge goes into making them look good. I'm drawing more lineart now to help with my digipainting!)

Do you like Vanille? I think I read you liked Selphie and Yuffie type characters, so I wonder if the pattern held up for this game. I'm a pretty huge Lightning fangirl, myself, hehe.

Haha, thanks Kiwi-chan!

Regarding the anatomy, I actually found that on attempting digital painting for the first time, it realllly showed up all the anatomical inaccuracies in how I draw faces. Even when I draw a relatively realistic face in line drawing, it's not really accurate, and the more realistic rendering shows it up. The thing about painting is that it's relatively easy to cover up weak anatomical drawing on the rest of the body with impressive polish, while with line art, your anatomy needs to be spot-on. With faces, though, you can be quite simple and abstract in lineart, but it doesn't work when you start rendering it realistically!

I'm not a huge Vanille fan actually. While Selphie is my favourite in 8, Rikku is pretty much tied with Yuna for me in X, Tifa is my favourite in 7, Celes in 6 and Faris in 5. My favourite female characters are generally ones who are down to earth, optimistic and practical. Vanille is somebody who runs away when things get hard and hides her intentions behind a cutesy facade, changing the subject to distract people's suspicions. This dishonest and weak behaviour is interesting as a trait, but I find it easier to root for Lightning, who faces up to challenges no matter what the odds.

Thanks! I think Lightning is awesome. She's possibly my new favourite FF main protagonist, which is impressive as Squall has held the top spot for over ten years now hahahaha!

It looks really nice, I like the way you kept the colours almost in pink monochrome, it looks lush ^^

darthmongoose In reply to PoisonRemedy [2010-08-29 21:02:22 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, there are pink tones in all of the colours in the image, and the shading is mostly using blue tones, it's a good way to practice digital painting, limiting the palette.

PoisonRemedy In reply to darthmongoose [2010-08-29 21:06:16 +0000 UTC]

It's always a good way to accentuate your colours to shade and highlight with other colours as opposed to different shades of the same colours. I try and do that wherever I can ^^.

Thanks, I'll keep trying haha!
