Description
There. I get people wondering how I do particular stages of the creation of this comic pretty regularly, so here we go. From start to finish, this is how I make a page.If you're after the sparkle brush (and there are other good brushes and screentones there) try For other brushes, you should really just try searching '
Obviously it goes without saying that drawing a comic takes a long time, so if it's taking you forever, you're not slow and stupid. That's normal. These pages take in the region of six hours each.

Thanks, this tutorial is for the old version of the comic. The new version I ink digitally and use some slightly different methods. I hope people find it useful still.

I don't have to feel bad that I don't use blue pencil.
Thanks for the link to screentones. I'll probably have to try it out on the next volume of TPCTH.
Looked through the gallery. It looks like you're still working hard. Are you going to put the new FDG on drunkduck? Goes to look.*

Yeah, It'll be going on DD, but as 'Fan Dan Go' rather than 'Fandango'. It got to the point where I was so busy and hadn't updated in ages, and I really think I could do a better job of it.

It's a lot of dedication (updating to a schedule). It is also one of the keys to webcomic success.
That's how Demon Eater hit up on so much popularity compared to my other webcomics.

-Yah, she's not kidding about that part; western artists average about a page of work a day and manga artists tend to hit their deadlines on the backs of their assistants.

Most serially released printed comics are made by teams. With American comics, it's done by splitting the work between writer, penciller, inker and colourist, while Japanese use a studio of assistants. The American way I kind of prefer because they credit their assistants.
With a webcomic, the printing time is removed, which frees up more time, this is how webcomics which have gone professional, or which have a simple style or limited number of panels can update often.
I guess I could do 3 pages a week at a push, but only if I didn't like doing anything else! Hahaha!
Yeah, they're very time consuming.

It's always interesting to see and learn someones technique when it comes to drawing. You always learn something new.
I've gotta keep some of those shading tips in mind, especially the use of purple opposed to black. Black shading does stand out to much, I'd need to really make the shading layer more transparent for it to work. But that in turn makes the light shaded areas less visible. I'll try purple in my next piece, thanks for that tip.
Do you use purple for shading all surfaces or primarily the character skins?

Originally I used black on a layer on about 20% transparency, but it was making characters look very pale and dead.

I then started changing the areas of shading on skin to brown, which was a little better.

(in fact, on that page, I used black for most things, then brown for Rocket's face and blue for her hair!)
Now I use purple on 'linear light' mode 30% transparency for all the shading. It removes the annoyance of doing the face areas in brown and everything else in black. Because it's on linear light mode, it doesn't look purple on all surfaces, but darkens with a slightly warm tinge.

Thanks, I did some experiments with it and they look great. Especially the skin looks allot better.

I see!
I should do one of these.
Except you'd probably be appalled with how radically different my process is. Or in awe of how much I do with so little, whichever. <_<
I keep looking for a drawing board like that, but I just can't seem to find any...
Ah, what the hell, I was about to work on the next page anyway. I'll get in on the tutorial action, heh.

Looking forward to seeing how you do a page. Tutorials are always enlightening! There's nothing bad with doing things differently, since there's no 'right' or 'wrong' way to make a comic, it's all in the outcome.
I've seen this type of drawing board online, try searching 'rotring drawing board'. They're quite pricey, I got mine off my Dad, he used to use it for diagrams when he worked in a shipyard when I was very little! Even though they cost a bit, they're great, this one is still going strong after more than twenty years and a trip to Japan and back!
