Description
Further forays into digital painting, trying to improve my work and produce some nice portfolio images. So you know when it's really late at night and you're tired and the sleepiness has reached a point where you may as well be drunk for how coherent you are? Well I was chatting to and was all "what should I draw tomorrow?" at which point I decided I would draw somebody in the snow...with a rainbow sword...fighting a lava monster. I then decided that as a challenge, I would not only point this, I would try to paint it as a legitimately decent piece of artwork. This is the result! I'm quite pleased with it actually.
All done in Photoshop, took about 4 hours.

Again, very nice! Mr. Rainbow Sword's body looks a little oddly positioned to me, but not in a really jarring way; I think it works. I really like the lava monster thingy, though. Quite awesome. Incidentally, this is the second piece in a row that (and I am totally letting my geek flag fly on this one) I looked at and thought, "...that could totally go on a Magic card with a little bit more polish." Which is a compliment from me, trust me. A little more practice and I think this digital paint stuff could be a really worthwhile artistic milieu for you. Keep at it!

Thank you. You mean mrs. rainbow sword lady hahaha. Yeah, the main focus here was on the light and colour and the values and stuff. Getting the basics and technique down before I start obsessing over the polish and the poses.

Gotta say, in writing it sounds absurd, but you really did pull it off, I didnt see it as not serious/epic until I saw your description It looks great, lighting is esp good, which I think is important in painterly images, and the mid action poses are very fluent.

Thanks, Bex. The lighting is really the hard part of painting. Form is relatively easy since form is an essential part of line work too, but the light in painting suddenly becomes a lot more complicated than anything you need to deal with in cel shading or line art!
I think with many concepts they can sound ridiculous and easily be made ridiculous, but if you think carefully about how to depict them you can make even something objectively pretty silly feel exciting. It's all in how you depict it!
