Description Juno, aka "Lynx" from 'Between Worlds', a beautiful webcomic by

Lately I've been experimenting with digital painting, and normally I'm a line artist, so this time I decided to experiment with combining the two. Using line art with a painty kind of smooth shaded colouring. It's a lot more time consuming as a way of colouring than cel-shading!

Wow, very nice! I've exprimented with that type of shading too and it's a pain in the butt. I think you did a really great job here.

Thanks. It's quite a time-consuming method. You have to slowly layer up the colour from dark to light. Turning down the 'flow' setting on brush tools helps a lot for a painterly effect.

Yeah, it is very time consuming and since I've got the attention span of a gnat...Eehh...

I am glad you stick with your current cel-shading style, with your choice of colors and everything, all your comics have that great 'Pop!' to them. It's really nice.

Hahaha, well, I can't really do this technique for more than special occasion pieces because it takes too long. Plus it just wouldn't fit something very bold and intentionally retro like FDG (not to mention I colour index FDG pages to make the files nice and small while still being a good size on screen!). Don't worry, the cel shading isn't going anywhere!

Thank you. Largely the colours were dependant on the character I was drawing. I wanted to get a sense of the kind of faded opulence seen in Anna's comic too.

Cool a Lynx fanart!
I really like the traditional looking composition, very suited to her!
Hm it looks interesting having combined the two different styles! I particulary like the painting on her uniform. You can really see all the build up of shades and how the paint strokes have been built up. I think it would look really nice if the softer/smoother colouring was done with a traditional media against your lovely bold lineart, but I think thats probably my personal taste talking! XD

I haven't worked with traditional media in a while. Maybe I'll dig out the markers and have a go. I've wanted to try watercolours again since I met Ron Smith and saw his amazing pages too.
Thankyouuu!
