Like the concept, but I think there's a little more to Star Trek then that. In fact, I think THIS is the wrong part to focus on.

What would I consider the important parts?

Kirk, Spock, Bones... and in the latest movie, they were all great, with Karl Urban bringing in a great performance as Bones. He just Channeled the Hell out of that character.

The sense of adventure, something I havent honestly felt since the original series.

The Technobabble and "Canon" taking a back seat to story, character, and action. Ihope to see more of the former two in the sequel coming in 2012. They have laid the ground work for a clear horizon without the burden of the dried of universe they came from, and have launched something bold. Here's hoping they dont screw it up by doing nothing but "slightly diferent rehashes."

I'd really like a full-scale war with the Klingons in the sequel.

Nice idea Dave! (And no, I haven't seen it yet. But I'm going to. Being unemployed, I'm going to go during a weekday when everyone is at work!) While there are things that I, as a fan, would have done differently with what appears to be a straight reboot couched in soe fan friendly terms (i.e., go nuBSG with it and rethink EVERYTHING) I'm sure I'll like it.

It's a good movie. Not the best of Trek but still a good one.

That's what I can not stand about those so-called hard core Trekkies; they don't embrace change well. Star Trek is still Star Trek down to its core.
Now that I seen Star Trek, I started to wonder will this version of James Tiberius Kirk is going to have the same love-hate relationship with Enterprise as William Shatner's version did?

Trunse In reply to ArgosKear [2014-07-07 16:19:12 +0000 UTC]

While I can fully emphasize with the notion that some fans are just petty about changes (Incidentally I can also emphasize with finding some changes hard to deal with. It's a matter of keeping perspective and not being a dick about it.) one of the issues most people who take issue seem to share on some level is the feeling that it is *not* Star trek down to it's core. The founding theme of Star Trek was always social criticism. Imagining a world of progress where the human race had gotten their shit together and learned to work past petty differences, commenting on the inherent natures of man, of war and on issues that it's current time faced. For many fans that is what Star Trek means so to them the films, because they do not prioritize being socially aware, are not at their core very Star Trek.

(I am not trying to tell you what to think of that yourself, of course, I just wanted to point out that whether or not the new Films carry the spirit of Star Trek is actually one of, if not the, major points of contention in the fandom.)

I think Kirk loved the Enterprise with passion, he never seemed to hate it...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArgosKear In reply to davemetlesits [2009-06-05 19:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Kirk's passion for the Enterprise is in someways like a addiction. It was all consuming. Remember in "Generations" when Kirk met Sulu's daughter for the first time and asked Scotty and Chekov, how Sulu managed to find time, to marry and have a family. Although, Kirk found love several times, somehow his duty to the Enterprise and Starfleet always seems to take first priority. Just like with anyone with a addiction that person begins to hate what is causing the addiction, but also loving the feeling that it is giving him/her. Why I said that Jim Kirk has a love-hate relationship with Enterprise.

Friday, my keister. I went and saw the movie on Thursday.

You see, everyone got all hyped up about May 8th but a lot of theaters started screenings on the 7th - which is when I got to see it. And there was no theater-trample-athon. A couple folks in costumes and a trio of Star Wars rabble-rousers that showed up afterwards, sure. But the cosplayers were respectful of the less-rabid fans and we threw the Star Wars rabble-rousers into the Pit Of Rabid Tribbles.

What you are saying Dave, the more thing the more stay the same. For me about 36 hours to go. I probably check out this weekend. The last time, I seen a Star Trek movie on its opening weekend was "five" the Final Frontier. I hope this one is better.

For me the Undiscovered Country ranks just behind the Wraith of Khan as my favorite Trek picture.I believe that Trek is at its best when the writers take their scripts from events that are happening in the world at present or come up with an idea that is so original that can you make think.

For myself; I a comic book geek. I do not go out search for months and spend hundreds dollars for one specific issue for a book. Before I slowed down I had over five thousand books ranging from Marvel's Amazing Spider-man to DC's Star Trek.

As a collector, Dave. Do you have what I called oddball comics. Comics based on characters and/or subjects outside the typical superhero books. Here are some of the odd ones I own: a couple books based on the eighties comedy ALF, Captain Carrot and Zoo Crew to me a cross between Bugs Bunny and Superman, Peter Porker: the Spectacular Spider-Ham a cross between Spidey and Porky Pig.

The thing is that the *New* constitution class looks like 10 years AFTER the Nemesis Sovereign... both as exterior aspect and the interior. And that pollution; ship constructed on the ground and Kirk with Uhura() ... oh Picard would be sooo pissed
