I've been struggling with trying to find the right program/device for digital art. I'm only a hobbyist but am *dying* to really get into this style. The largest setback I have is finances, I cannot afford anything expensive. Do you have any advice as far as art devices (tablets, desktop, etc.) and free art programs? Eventually if my drive remains steady, I can save up for something nicer.

When I was first starting out I used Gimp and it was the best option at the time because it was free

Late reply, but I was on the market looking for a cheap Wacom tablet. I found one (probably the same one you were speaking of) that was a small, cheaper Wacom that also came with Corel Essentials 6. Perfect bundle when I've been stuck with free programs and my mouse.
Thanks for the advice on which tablet to buy, it helped a great deal and led me to my purchase. GIMP, I agree, is an amazing program that will be added to my arsenal as well. Hopefully some time soon I will have some better quality art up (with some practice)!

That's a wonderful idea! I am using a Chromebook right now, which won't allow me to download anything. :/ However, I've been looking at a Surface Pro 2 that's $200 and could double as both my personal laptop and art device. I did have a question about Wacoms though. The ones I have seen are the boards that you draw on and it transfers to your computer screen. This might be a silly question, but I always thought it would be difficult to know where you were drawing, if that makes sense? For example, with touchscreens it's easy to tell where the line will be drawn because it's direct contact. But with an attached board with no screen, how do you know where to touch on the board so that it transfers correctly to the screen? Might be ignorance on my part, I've never used one. :3

You get used to it! Plus you can see the pen when its hovering so it's easy to see where you are drawing

Wow. My laptop isa touchscreen asus, but dang! Even with a touchscreen this looks difficult. O.o (I find it easier to draw by hand than with mouse.)

Take the lasso and outline the markings and then change the color to white
