Thanks, you really helped me out. I was so used at coloring using PS that I got stumped when I tried to do it on FireAlpaca.

Hello! I just want to say thank you for the tutorial!
My only problem with it so far is step 8. You say to fill it in black then change the blend settings to add. Then pick a highlight color? What do you mean fill in black?
I'm extremely confused by this.

deidaraart5 In reply to Zombitrix [2017-04-07 06:53:41 +0000 UTC]
Remember how the shading steps said to fill your layer with your shadow color? It's the same thing, only you're using black because when you put the layer on Add mode, black doesn't show up, only whatever color you choose for your highlights does. It's for blending purposes! (The watercolor tool blends much more smoothly if it's not painting on transparent pixels)
Sorry if this explanation is bad qwq

It's okay but do you think maybe you'd be able to do a tutorial showing the steps? I'm still lost.

Okay, so I tried this.. (might have gotten confused a couple times, then reedited) and I still come out with the same result.
I don't know if its how I shaded or if I'm just dumb but here is my result (Is it only for human-like figures?):

Am I doing something wrong? Please tell me.

Oh, man, I haven't used dA in months. Just here to say that I stumbled upon your tutorial today and it's been very, very helpful !! I've been struggling a lot with shading digitally, and while I knew where to put the shadows, I never managed to make them look how I wanted to. I only used this tecnique once but it's been very useful, thank you very much !!
Here is the drawing I made using your technique. I'm very happy about how it came out, the shading finally looks right for me:

I plan on using this technique more in the future for any drawings I might do.
