Description
How to remove that pesky White from a Black and white picture, so you can make brushes and color line-art of sketches.I was debating for a long time weather or not to create this tutorial. Cause I know, and I apologize for all the dumb ass kids who are going to use this to spam DA with coloring book pictures and what not.
BUT it's for a good cause, because now all those wonderful artist who have tons of sketches that they won't color, can have a little help with that. 8]
Plus I'm sure it will come in handy some time or another.

This is so much better than the "channels" method I've been using. Intact, crisp lines at last!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I just draw the image on a different layer, so if I want to remove the white I can just delete the layer. Sure this works fine though

Just use Alt, if that doesn't work than use the alt/ Windows key [link]

Since I don't own a tablet, I tend to do all my sketching and line art by hand, and coloring on the computer is a pain in the butt when you have to work with the stupid white. This tutorial will be super helpful! Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for making this! I'm a dumbass and couldn't figure out how to do it before lol It will be handy if I ever start doing trades again (stupid busy life) and would like to collaborate by colouring another artist's linework (never done that before without having to draw over their linework again myself - then again it was a pencil sketch so it didn't matter too much
)

0_0 I had no idea one could do that with such a great result. if nothing else, this will be a great help on the clip art gallery I'm trying to make and running into the "white halo" problem.
and this would be great on a few of my pics that I wanted to make lineart from but forgot to save it before I "smoothed" it.

This is great. I ink far smoother by hand than with a computer, so this will help me with digital colouring...of my OWN works! hahaha

Ooohhh! nice! This is pretty complicated though! the way I do it is pretty simple.... I think it's...... you go to Channels and select the... blue? channel, and then you invert the selection, and then you fill the selection on a new layer with black (or whatever color you feel like).
Maybe that isn't simpler, maybe I'm just used to it But masks honestly frighten me. I don't know what they are, and I will only tentatively poke them with sticks from a safe distance.

DJCoulzAnimalsOnly In reply to Flameshadow117 [2010-03-14 17:33:40 +0000 UTC]
XD it may be slightly scary at first, but if you ignore the fact that they are masks, it should become a simple task! XD

this is a fantastic tutorial! there are still a lot of people on dA that upload colouring book pages, but don't claim it as their own, just as colour practice they might be proud of. curious, what do you think of that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DJCoulzAnimalsOnly In reply to Capricornfox [2010-03-14 02:39:22 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, it's one thing if your really challenging yourself and what not, and even then you can practice coloring this way, but then don't upload it.
But I don't want a whole bunch of kids who color over screen shots, or upload all tracings, to start using this to color, coloring book pages and make them into their characters and upload them and flood DA with more retardedness. There's already to many kids on DA who trace a screen shot of Disney and then add a new mane and say "This is my character lolz"
Cause then it'd be like all the people on Myspace who color over screen shots(and TLK artists pictures) and make accounts for ridiculously colored characters and think they are cool. Cause people like that have no respect for the hard work other people put into their pictures.
