Description This is an old iteration of the Anparym species. Expect changes in any new submissions featuring them.

please~

About Uspi: Personality-wise, she is a relatively level-headed, easygoing individual. Uspi is more concerned with the emotions of those who are close to her rather than her own. She can behave like quite a doormat to avoid conflict: when faced with unfamiliar people she tends to clam up and practically ignore their existence unless she absolutely has to interact. She tends to act more strong-willed when her face is covered by one of her altered skulls, rather than simply bound in cloth as is her species' custom.
She had a normal childhood for an anparym, being ingested as an egg and spending the larval years of her life inside her living host body and continuing as normal upon moulting and breaching. When she neared her adult stage, however, she made the very odd decision to leave the underground cities that anpari, among many other species, are considered exclusive to.

About Anpari:
Anpari (singular anparym) are parasitic as larvae, ingested as eggs through a water source, or, if there isn't a reliable source present, implanted in a host body by the mother herself—she will make a small cut where the host is unlikely to see or reach the wound (between the shoulder blades, for example) and insert the egg by hand.
Anpari secrete a numbing lubricant from glands located at the base of fins on their tails, which they apply to their target's skin before cutting into it. They are relatively slow moving and will only target prey at night, when their quarry is sleeping.
An adult anparym no longer enters a host body: instead they simply numb their prey and kill them by cutting their throat, or through similar means.
Anpari do not stay in the host until adulthood, they exhaust the resources it provides long before that. The host dies, and the young anparym--just out of its fragile larval form--will breach from the body. The young anparym takes an alarmingly large portion of the host's body just prior to breaching, which tends to show outwardly, generally giving the creature a visibly distended stomach, the abdomen being where the anparym will stay as it nears breaching.
The anparym's form upon breaching is similar to a much smaller form of an adult. Perhaps what could be considered a more standard 'child' form.
In this form, they hunt in the way adult anpari do.
Anpari's true eyes are extremely photosensitive, and cannot be exposed to direct light. They have simple eyes on their bodies that can process light, or lack of it, giving them the ability to judge their surroundings to some extent when they cannot otherwise see properly.

Anpari are not an open species.

If you read all that, post "worm".
I finished a ref sheet? Oh god. It's a miracle.

The art and character concept are very nice, but as for the species itself, oviparity and sapience don't mix. Also, what are the "breasts" for? If they aren't mammals and don't care for their young, what function do those serve? I also can't see a parasite evolving sapience/hands with opposable thumbs, since they wouldn't need them. Consider the mechanics behind humans evolving into tool users, and what we, as mammals, had to evolve before we could develop intelligence.

If these are purely fantasy creatures, then don't pay any attention to me, lol. I'm just very anal when it comes to scientific accuracy in species

Hey, you totally picked up on what I've been planning to change for this species!
The 'breasts' are being removed in future iterations. They used to be considered a demonic species which, as you touch in your last line, sort of throws logic out of the equation.

Thumbs are necessary in their adult life, however, since they do not stay parasitic in that form... certainly the fantasy/alien aspect comes in to play there with them actually being sentient beings, but I wanted to use the idea to think of just how a sentient, non-loving parasite would behave as opposed to a standard, maternal mammal.
It's what's driven my interest in the species, to be frank.

I think even a demonic species should follow logic to some extent, though. Fantasy is based in reality, after all.

Yeah, I agree with you. What I'm saying is that the demonic part was the initial concept for the character and species, which no longer exists.

If you're going for a plausible species, I would change the oviparity thing as well. Maybe they could be an ovoviviparous species, injecting the larvae into a host once the yolk sac is depleted? Considering the amount of energy that brain development in sapient creatures require, I think that would partition the energy needs realistically.

Worm.
Really great char- and race design. Does this race prefere any kinds of host bodies? I mean, are the victims mainly humans or other animals like deers or... something.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

This race, when given the choice, will go after non-sentient beings. There are a few reasons for this; the particular group that Uspi originated from is one of the more civilized examples of anpari, they live within the boundaries of a country in which many species coexist under a few rather simple laws. To try to use any of these sentient races as a host could be easily classed as attempted murder, thus resulting in the mother being incarcerated, as well as this already shaky coexistence between species being further damaged, quite likely eliminating the chance to reap the benefits of living under the country’s protection, and so on.
Another reason for this choice, which is true with near every anpari tribe; is that their larvae are far more likely to survive to breach if implanted in a simple-minded creature, as most sentient species would be able to remove and destroy the young anparym before it caused fatal damage to its host.

Ah ok. Always good to hear, that people also come up with "monster" - races that try to come along with humans.

I love her design. Not only the colors, but the explanation of her kind as well makes her extremely interesting the species as well as the character are extremely original and I personally adore that sort of thing Fantastic work on both this little reference sheet and her bio ^^

I adore originality as well, and it really is something I strive for in my art, characters and species, so it's really wonderful to read that Uspi and anpari are considered as such.
Thanks so much, again. (:

You're very very welcome ^^ You're one of the few artists I've come across that everything I've seen from you has yourself in it and not others or anything else to be seen in it - as strange as it may sound it makes me happy to see your art itself as well as its originality :3 Keep up the great work ^^

One thing isn't clear, though. What happens to the host when they become adults?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

drawitout In reply to jackmcslay [2011-08-15 19:20:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Good thing to point out, that's something I should definitely have more information on in the comments. Thank you!
Anpari do not stay in the host until adulthood, they exhaust the resources it provides long before that. The host dies, and the young anparym (just out of its initial, fragile, larval form) will breach from the body. The anparym would still be quite small (though not so much when it's taken into consideration it's a parasite. They take up an alarming portion of the host body just prior to breaching.)
...But, I digress. When the anparym breaches, it is similar to a much smaller form of an adult. Perhaps what could be considered a more standard 'child' form.
In this form, they hunt in the way adult anpari do.

worm.

This is such an awesome character. I have a soft spot for making up parasitic creatures, it's great to look at what others can think of What I like most about this character, is that it looks more like a worm than a snake. I love worms. But the masses love snakes more :/ I see tons of snakes, but hardly any worms.

Again, wonderful character.

I'm glad you think so! Parasite designs can be so fun to work with. And, your right, there aren't really very many worm-like characters or species around. I'm fond of snakes, but yeah, I've seen quite a few about too.

Thank you! ^^
