Description Meh, I'm just not a polisher. That's my problem. It's why The Pact's laborious inking and washing process is driving me crazy. It hasn't diminished my enthusiasm for dinosaurs, though!

I did this to resist taking a nap after me ma and I did some serious spring cleaning around my house. This is as much for my reference as it is everyone else's; I break half these rules most of the time. I mean, I grew up drawing raptors like Talon from Primal Rage and the Jurassic Park raptors, who had some serious anatomical mistakes. When I was little, I drew raptors with just the feathers on their heads, like Talon (boy, was I a fan of Talon), so a lot of the feather stuff has been quite a hurdle to overcome.

I really wish I could've had a single, beautiful, unbroken line of comic pages, but I couldn't take the pressure. My artistic aesthetic needed to breathe free! Expect about a page a week from now on.

So this is your theory? Or is it scientific fact? (I haven't been keeping up with the latest on dinos). It seems like a fuller range of motion would be necessary for any decent kind of running stride, so the 90 degree rule strikes me as odd - particularly as there is a fairly significant different between theropods and quadrupeds. Hm, I'm going to have to do some digging now.

Well, in the run cycle of the Utahraptor in the Making of Walking with Dinosaurs, I thought the stride looked a little weird. The 90 degree rule makes for a kind of quickstep. [link] also shows the dislocation thingie.
But I suppose everything about dinosaurs could be considered theory for the most part.

Good point. XD Hm, I see what you're saying. I does make sense now that I look at it, that's pretty interesting. Anywho, thanks for the info!

this is a really nice tutorial and all, but can you add the skeletal structure in? even if it's a rough structure
i feel it needs references to the skull as well.. you have no idea the wonders skull references can teach you when you're trying to get better at drawing something :3
but yeah great work anyways!

I wish I was more of an anatomy artist, but I usually try to approach things from a form-concept stage. Circles and gesture are a lot easier to grasp than memorizing every bone and where it goes. Usually I try and learn what the skeleton CAN'T do, and internalize that so I'm less likely to draw things.
Maybe I'll do a whole page of dinosaur skeletons as part of a tutorial eventually. I think it's kind of a given that you have to look at the skeletons of dinos, cause you're not gonna find 'em in zoos anywhere.

i don't expect that at all.. that's why i said a ROUGH skeletal structure.. since you know, obviously skeletons are hard enough as it is... i can't remember EXACTLY how everything goes together in just the leg of a canine, but i remember enough to know how to shape it.. it's just mostly the skull angles
i got an anatomy book for christmas, and it gave me such inspiration that i see anatomies and tutorials or guides on such in a very new way..i see new standards.. it's just me though
i would love to see the skull at least! from a bird's eye perspective, beneath, from the side, frontal... just that, you know? so you can see how it's shaped.. cuz one angle might not show what the next one can.. which is how we understand dynamics, is it not? you can't take a picture of a human skull from one angle and see exactly how it is shaped from that single picture, right? well ... i also see the skull basics in all the sketches of your tutorial here
so i felt it should be shown as well... i dunno, just trying to give a complex critique on how to improve it, you don't HAVE to do it, obviously

Yay, Raptor tutorial! I gotta say, Droe, I am way diggin' this comic of yours. Can't wait to see the raptors and the iguanadons interact!

Perhaps I shall get around to doodling a raptor, myself. I don't think I've ever tried...
