Description Meh, I'm just not a polisher. That's my problem. It's why The Pact's laborious inking and washing process is driving me crazy. It hasn't diminished my enthusiasm for dinosaurs, though!

I did this to resist taking a nap after me ma and I did some serious spring cleaning around my house. This is as much for my reference as it is everyone else's; I break half these rules most of the time. I mean, I grew up drawing raptors like Talon from Primal Rage and the Jurassic Park raptors, who had some serious anatomical mistakes. When I was little, I drew raptors with just the feathers on their heads, like Talon (boy, was I a fan of Talon), so a lot of the feather stuff has been quite a hurdle to overcome.

I really wish I could've had a single, beautiful, unbroken line of comic pages, but I couldn't take the pressure. My artistic aesthetic needed to breathe free! Expect about a page a week from now on.

As a dinosaur enthusiast and an artist, this provided me with info I had NEVER known before.

It pleases me and my love of the raptor, as well as makes me want to whip out a sketchbook and doodle some. <3 Lots of great detail and info here!

I have an idea for a book, maybe you can help, i am drawing a kind of science gone wrong, and people must live with dinos about 3000 years in the future, the world had become durasic, humans are now living with dinos and Rapters have become their mounds, how would one RIDE a Rapter? Want to help me out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Droemar In reply to AdorableJoker [2009-10-04 16:46:53 +0000 UTC]

I'd look into riding ostriches. They'd move in pretty much the same way, real lateral, side-to-side motion for the rider.
Seriously. Youtube it. Ostrich riders.

yeah i seen that, kids love doing it, there are races with kids for fun, i'll look is up, any idea what kind of harness you would put on a Rapter, no saddle but you want reins or something right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Droemar In reply to AdorableJoker [2009-10-04 17:41:11 +0000 UTC]

I think if you had reins you'd want a saddle on the things. Dino Riders had the mind control masks ... that was always kind of cool. I personally would want a kind of muzzle thingie on mine ... I guess it depends on how domesticated they were for me to trust them.

Ah! Raptors! Love them!

I sort of don't like the feather-wing-arms, but I just resign myself that it's FACT now. Or close to it.

The only dinosaurs that appear in stories of mine are essentially dinosaur recreations that aren't exactly perfect or dinosaur-like-creatures that look a lot like, but are not really dinosaurs.

Ah, the ways I get around science... D:

I have to say, since my beloved childhood toy was Talon from Primal Rage, anything beyond the crest of feathers at the back of the head seems weird to me, too. I like the look okay, but it seems to evoke the dismaying fact that the turkey's ancestor could gut someone.

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

SilverBellsAbove In reply to Droemar [2009-04-20 11:57:26 +0000 UTC]

I know! On one hand, when I eat turkey, I think "AW SWEET I'M EATING RAPTOR", but on the other hand I think, "Oh, no! I'm eating a poor raptor!"

Lose-lose situation, I guess.

It doesn't help that raptors with feathers invoke a cute'n cuddly response with me, yet they were mad serious deadly.

I really should draw more dinosaurs. I love drawing them, they're so fun to do. I've loved them since I first argued with the guards at the Smithsonian about how the triceratops was standing next to the Stegosaurus and it was an anachronism... when I was three.

Dino-maniac once, Dino-maniac forever.

WOW! Great! I draw raptor! Some of them are inspired by JP movies and the "hollywoodian" version tend to stretch the leg more than "anotomic correct" version.... but the JP's raptor is impossible to correct... is too cool like that....

However, great job ma!

Quickly add in my fav!

GO!

Very nice. I hope that this gets passed around amateur dinosaur artists, for raptors seem to be the one dinosaurian clade that people consistently get wrong artistically.

I do have two minor critiques of your tutorial. The first one is just a suggestion, rather. Even though your arm feather attachment is correct, you might want to point it out in text that the feathers would attach to the second finger. A lot of people who attempt to give their dromaeosaurs feathers (an admirable attempt, usually) neglect to do this, though fossil evidence indicates that feather-bearing dromaeosaurs probably had their "wing" feathers arranged this way.

Second critique is more anatomical, which is that the tails you've drawn here are all too short, and the tail-tip of the sitting raptor sketch would not have been able to bend that way. Dromaeosaur tails were very flexible at the base, but the rest of the tail was practically inflexible due to support rods. All dromaeosaur tails are very long, also, in order to counterbalance the weight of the front half while running. A good general rule of thumb is that the tail is going to be at least as long as the rest of the body with the neck stretched forward.

I love your foot sketches especially; they're perfect.

Even though I've been drawing raptors for ages, I'm adding this to my faves in the hopes that more people see it, as they should.

You're definitely the undeniable Dino-Queen that's for sure. The research undertaken to get the anatomy and knowledge... Heh-heh-heh, really though I highly commend your efforts. It's just another level you work at... I won't be surprised if one day y'make it doing a dinosaur movie or something. Anyway, my humblest plaudit goes out to you, Ma'am. actually i already knew that the tail acted as a counterbalance, the claw was held up and it had feathers, but this was still really helpful! 10/10!

HydragonFire In reply to cutetoboewolf [2009-01-14 02:02:29 +0000 UTC]

actually velociraptor was a group of species, including deinonichus, which was about as tall as it was in the movies.

beastofoblivion [2008-02-12 17:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I wasn't aware the raptors could not extend their legs past that 90 degree angle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Droemar In reply to beastofoblivion [2008-02-12 19:02:13 +0000 UTC]

They can swing the leg very, very far forward, but if the bone swings back it would dislocate. Considering horse's legs can never be farther away from each other than 90 degrees, it made sense to me that it would apply elsewhere.
