Description
In keeping with what I did to the Lyung [link] I've revamped another of my fantasy creatures: the Tgelet (original here: [link] ). Not sure if this will be the final design, and I will certainly try different color schemes.Close relatives of Lyungs, Tgelet live underground most of the time. In their adolescense, they are not very strong, but highly agile and fast. By the time they reach sexual maturity, they accumulate massive rolls of fat, an evolutionary carryover from their pre-technological days, when they required blubber to keep them warm in the sunless depths (the Tgelet pictured here is the developmental equivalent of a 35 year old human). At this point, they can no longer hunt or labor very easily, so these duties fall to the younger generation. In this way, social status follows age very closely, with the highest officials being the oldest, and the young posessing almost no civil rights.

I really like the colours of this guy. And i like the way his arms get skinny on the lower parts. It's a solid drawing.
You're a skier? Me too. I'm moving out to Golden BC in a few weeks to rip it up. whooo!

Glad you like! The arm thing is something I've actually observed (to a lesser extent) in elderly overweight women. It's really bizarre.
I'd hardly call myself "a skier". I'm not very good or anything, it's just fun. Have fun in BC!

I love the contrast between the baggy folds of skin and the almost skeletal forearms and fingers! Say, do you like Terryl Whitlatch at all, the Star Wars lady? This creature recalls her style a bit to me.
Your use of color and value on the toned paper really makes the drawing pop...Beautiful work!

Thanks very much! I have Whitlach's Star Wars Wildlife book, and it's been a joy and an inspiration for me.
I actually drew the sketch on white paper, then added the color and background in photoshop, but I'm pleased it looks like toned paper. Thanks again for the comment.

Wow, I'm amazed...The color and texture really does look like an artifact of the paper to me. Beautiful work!

Thanks a lot! I had planned on it just being a sketch, but once I put the drawing into Photoshop, I got a bit carried away.

Wow...now your getting somewhere...Nice one.
I'm amazed at how filtering a couple of ideas can get you extremely unique creatures. It looks well thought out. Keep up the good work.

Thats one bizarre looking creature, but in an awesome way. The facial features are incredible and greatly definied. Love the skin textures and fur. Brilliant work indeed.

Thanks so much! Glad you like it.
I'm not sure what "fur" you mean, though... it's meant to be hairless.

I see it now, must just be the textures giving the slight illusion of fur in places.
Your very welcome too.

Wow. What an improvement! You've managed to make your recent designs look very believable. The weight of the body seems nicely distributed, and the folds are all juust right~

Woah... that's friggin' sweet! Don't wanna run into one of those in a dark alleyway.
I'm not sure if the blue and pink/red are the right colors for something that lives underground and is semi-fast. I think colors that would help it be camouflaged would work better.

DSil In reply to Tatsuroshi-san [2007-09-17 06:58:58 +0000 UTC]
Thanks very much! You make a good point about the coloration, but the blue and red only develop when the Tgelet is old enough to mate, and by that time it's not hunting any more. The more active adolescents are the brown of this one's back all over.

Tatsuroshi-san In reply to DSil [2007-09-17 07:03:22 +0000 UTC]
Ah, that makes sense... is there a coloration difference in males and females? Well... if we can till who's who ^_^;;

DSil In reply to Tatsuroshi-san [2007-09-17 07:10:13 +0000 UTC]
I think females will have white faces, but no red & blue. But around humans they all wear masks and full-body robes, so you couldn't tell anyway.
