This has got to be the quickest way I have seen to cell shade after looking through many, many tutorials on the subject. You make it look that simple, because it is!

It's amazing how some artists are very guarded about their techniques for their art but not Edward. Great tutorials with true insight from a great artist. It's very refreshing to see and learn.

question
how do you make sure the blue background doesnt get shaded too?
cos by the pics, i see your lasso tool goes outside the pic itself

i keep my character on one layer and the back ground on a different layer. This is also great because you are able to move the character around [link] , change the back ground [link] or use it in other art pieces [link] . it also saves a lot of headaches and confusion when you are coloring your work [link] or just adding extra shading [link] to your art. I hope this answers your question

that's weird it should be a perfect cut no lines at all. Try checking the settings on the lasso tool is provably the feathering if you see a number there, erase it and write 0 on it. The weird thing is you mentioned it cannot be erased. If this line was caused by this effect, erasing should not be effected. Maybe you have a stroke around the image. Go to LAYER>> LAYER STYLE and make sure you don't have a stroke on that layer. try these and let me know what happens.

This method is in a way a natural way of adding shadows. I mean after all shadows are just darker areas on an object. If you just find a way to darken an area you can create an accurate illusion of shadow.

If I made shadows in the past I'd cut the opacity and dull the main color used with a color wheel method(example blue with a little orange then a hint of black if needed.) Yours seems much easier than the trail and error mixing I've done.
