Description October 19, 2011 Prompt: Ink

Yes, I was greatly inspired by Riza Hawkeye's Flame Array tattoo for this piece. Because you know it's that awesome. ...And, yes, I am also a Royai fan. That's cool, right?

(Melodramatic) Prompt Interpretation:

With Kid's ascension to the role of Lord Death, Liz and Patty are elevated to the positions of Head Death Scythes. Kid needs their guidance, affection, and strength now more than ever, and becomes troubled by the knowledge that - as mortals - they will not live as long as he will.

After much research, however, Kid discovers a solution that will tie the girls' lifespans and aging rate to his own: he can imbue their bodies with pieces of his own godly soul through mysterious, long-forgotten arts. These soul pieces must be sealed inside of them, however, by an ancient array invoking the power and protection of the Grim Reaper himself.

The tattoo inked on Liz's back, therefore, is a symbol of the unbreakable, everlasting bond she has with the young god she has grown to admire, defend, and love.

(How's that for a love story?)

Thanks so much! And, yes, the official fanon name for Roy x Riza in FMA is "Royai". Pretty much everyone uses it, I think. It's cool, though, since "ai" means "love" in Japanese and the "ai" part sort of sounds like the end of "HawkEYE".

But yeah, you won't find the Flame Array in the anime (at least, in the original anime, but I haven't seen "Brotherhood" yet). But it is in the manga. To make a long story short, Riza's father was the one who created flame alchemy, and to keep his work a secret, he tattooed the complex array on his daughter's back. However, Riza chose to share the secret with Roy, who had been her father's apprentice. So... basically, Roy learned his trademark alchemy from staring at Riza's back, lol. There's more to it than that, but, yeah. It's pretty cool.

Here's a link to a pic of Riza's tattoo, if you're interested: [link]

How's that for a love story?

OMG YES YES It's beautiful!
For some reason, I never had the imagination to think up a way for the girls have a lifespan like Kid. And now, I don't think I've ever been more intrigued by a fanon idea than this one.

That tattoo is grand. (I love FMA btw) Baww, and their body language is killing me. I love to her arm around his neck like that, almost causal, like it's such a familiar gesture. And then Kid's head bowed against her shoulder... and his hands..
I love their simple black shapes with Liz's bare skin in contrast. It really does make me think of them as one in the same.
Whatever the details of the ancient art that Kid used, it seems to have exhausted him in every way, or that's how I interpret the picture, at least. The embrace is so comforting and solemn. I imagine this is slightly different from the imbuing of Patty, only in that Liz would hold him and their bodies would remain singular like that for a long quiet moment.

I LOVE THIS AND COULD GO ON FOREVER

Eeeeee! I'm so glad you love it! And your interpretation of the pose is just... beautiful. Just exactly what I was going for.

This is actually not my "real" fanon opinion on how the girls could have a lifespan like Kid's... I just sort of tweaked it to go with the "ink" theme. But I do like how it works out, with that very physical reminder - in the form of the tattoo - of just how closely Liz (and Patty) are linked to Kid. I may even include it in my official considerations now, ha ha...

My "real" opinion is something like this:

There are a lot of "immortals" in SE (meaning, in this case, "entities that often retain their youthful appearance but at the very least live for many centuries," rather than true immortality, since death gods can apparently die themselves). Not just Lord Death and Kid, but all of the witches, weird creatures like Free and Mosquito, people who can switch bodies like Giriko, and people who have gained a ridiculous amount of power... like Asura and the other members of Shigami's old elite team, such as Eibon. So obviously, SE's immortality is not just a matter of godly inheritance, but can also be "acquired" through various methods.

I can imagine Kid knowing - or finding out about - the possibility of a mortal acquiring immortality, and wondering if he can somehow use one of these methods to keep Liz and Patty with him for the rest of his life. Even though such a thing might upset "the balance of life" that Kid exists to protect, I can see him rationalizing this by the fact that their continued living presence will actually be of benefit to the world as a whole, since his fighting ability as a Grim Reaper is greatly increased through his connection to those two Weapons only... not to mention they are the only ones who can keep Kid sane.

Whether I think Lord Death would support Kid in his research or not, I can't quite decide. On the one hand, I think he likes the girls and would want Kid to have them with him; on the other, he might disapprove, considering the betrayals of his own (immortal) comrades eight hundred years ago. Given the girls' rough history, Lord Death might be concerned that the power of immortality could warp them into criminals again...

Anyway, I imagine Kid doing research - sometimes in secret, sometimes with the girls' blessing, sometimes with both his father's and the girls' blessing, and sometimes with only a reluctant blessing from Liz, who I can see being uncertain about the prospect of living so long a life. Of course, I always see him finding a way, and of it succeeding, and sometimes of it causing his friends (particularly Black*Star with his god-complex) to be upset or jealous because they were not given the same precious gift...

But as often as I think of him finding a method through ancient Shinigami-related magic or of some spiritual bond that goes far deeper than Soul Resonance, I think of Kid finding a way through "scientific" means. Particularly, something like the Black Blood. If Medusa can create a blood type that causes madness, why can't there be a blood type that can grant immortality or grant the nature of an immortal shinigami? Well, such a blood type is actually already canon; in the manga, Mosquito mentions at one point that Kid has a rare blood type: Type D. Obviously, this is supposed to be Type "Death" Blood, or a blood only for Shinigami. So, following the series' logic, couldn't Kid find a way to replace Liz and Patty's blood with Type D, thus giving them many of the same powers as himself (especially the immortality)? Medusa, after all, replaced all of Crona's blood with Black Blood, so this sort of "total blood transfusion leading to new powers and abilities" is obviously within the realm of possibility. Whether Kid would have to replace their blood with transfusions of his own blood a little at a time, or if such a thing could possibly be sythesized, is also another concept I wonder about...

Ultimately, though, Kid ends up with two immortal Weapons, and Troika gets to stay together forever (or, as long as "immortality" lasts in SE). The End! XD

...And, thank you for reading this long rant. I could go on forever as well! But it's nice to write down somewhere anyway.

...This really would make an excellent fan fiction.

oh man their poses are fantastic...very nice interpretation. I don't want to think about Kid outliving them X_X
but if he's death then can't he just find their souls when they pass on?

Ah, thanks my dear! "Ink" was such an interesting prompt to put a spin on. (That's when I think prompts work best: when you can do the unexpected with them, rather than following the obvious intent of the prompter.) I'm glad the poses seem to have worked out as well... My better pieces are usually the result of looking at a model to get the pose right, but I just ended up drawing this out of my head when I couldn't find the sort of stock photo I wanted. So that is encouraging!

Oh, and I HATE thinking of Kid outliving them! Hate it, hate it, hate it! I refuse to read those sad, depressing fics where Kid is the only one left young and alive after all of his friends have died of old age, etc... So my intent here was really to find a way around that whole problem, which is actually sort of the "pink elephant" in the KidLiz room.

Since there is a lot of "immortal" magic and psuedo-scientific experimentation in "Soul Eater," I tried to come up with a rather canonical way for Liz and Patty's lifespans to be expanded to match Kid's own. That's what the ancient magic and the tattoo seal are supposed to be for: to allow the Thompsons to be sort of like semi-deities, that will stay young and live for centuries or even millenia, just like Kid. So then they would no longer be mortal! Maybe they could even inherit some of Kid's awesome Grim Reaper powers.

Does that make it better?

O_O Holding that thought! I need to know this idea, tomodachi! Come back out of the swirling mists of Luthadel.... *runs after vanishing darkness* ...Tomodachi?

Heck yeah! I will convert you to a true KidLiz fan yet!

We need to watch both SE and FMA again, for old times' sake. And CT especially needs to be shown FMA, though we ought to at least show her enough of SE that she gets to see a certain "non-fictional fictional character"...

XD

Bwahahahahahahaha!!! I was already a KidLiz fan and a Royai fan! Twu wuv!

I am feeling a FMA and SE marathon... STAT!!!!

Also.. I turned on FMAB last night... guess which episode they were playing... the Nina one. WHY?!!! WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO ME?

EeveebethFejvu In reply to unicornut5 [2011-10-23 20:20:08 +0000 UTC]

The marathon sounds AWESOME. Also, we need to sneak "Wolf's Rain" in some time before the end of spring semester. That shouldn't be too hard, right?

And of course it's always the Nina one. Either that, or their mother dying, or - for me - Maes' funeral. Yep. Those must be CN's favorite episodes, huh? :\
