Very helpful. I recently had this idea for a kimono Mermaid, but then realized- "Wait, which way is this thing supposed to wrap? She's not dead!"
This guide is very simple and easy to understand, and I will probably use it again.

This is great! It drives me crazy when people who should know better get this wrong! e.g. "normal" sleeves, feet that don't work with the shoes, a flairing skirt etc. Well done! But still, where is her obi age?

Sorry if I came across as fussy, it's more that I was taught it as a modern fundamental accessory. But yes, previous to the 1920's people probably didn't wear them.

This is nice to see. Explaining the traditional method of wearing a kimono for us artist can definitely help for when one might wanna sketch a traditional Japanese woman or the like.

No. Just the obi. It's very narrow, knot on the back. Ah and there is no lateral fold on the stomach.

thank you so much for this, I love kimonos and I make my characters wear them, but sometimes even picture reference is not enough due one misses spots.
However, one small question, when is wrapped (the collar, the thing #1 is pointing) it goes around all the way to the back or what happens, i dont see the lines of the collar continue after the obi.
the other question was answered on 9, because of that part i always wondered if most kimonos are 2 pieces, lol, but its just shortened, so, i imagine is being hanged from the inside, or am i wrong?

1) Collar is short and it just is hidden in the belt fold. Look at the collar

2) This should help

A question on #8: I've heard that women's kimonos have the opening like you've pictured, while men's kimonos do not. I don't if that's true or don't, do you know?
Very nice tutorial, by the way!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Elruu In reply to opheliareturns [2010-04-27 10:00:32 +0000 UTC]
the opening depends from the type of kimono, not from gender
lonf sleeve kimono has it
