I absolutely love this piece...must admit this is the first time that someone captured Rand the way I see him in my head...I like the way you used the play of shadow and light to create space and motion with the three characters, and I like your representation of Cadsuane's headpiece, everyone always draws it as ornaments hung on hair-chopsticks.
About someone's comment below, that you reversed the hands, I would disagree..if he has the skill of a blade master, he technically wouldn't have a dominant sword hand.
All in all, thank you so much for sharing this, good Wot fanart is rare and hard to find.

The picture is really good, but, you reversed the hands. His right hand should hold the sword, and his left hand should be behind his back.

I agree with some of Elbo3's comments, but on the whole I still like it.Β I'd also like to see what you come up with when you make changes.Β You may want to scrap it, but it's good enough in my opinion to make it into my WOT art folder

I'm not really feeling it with this one, I'm afraid. Β It's a good effort though, so don't worry.
Rand himself is ok - the face is nice. Β The shading on his coat is off though - his right arm looks 3D, but his torso looks very flat. Β His hand isn't quite right either - if you grasp something at the angle that he's holding the sword, you'll notice your fingers don't line up so perfectly. Β That's a small niggle though.
Now... Min & Cadsuane. Β Not a lot to say about them, as I just think they look unfinished. Β Cadsuane doesn't really have much of a face, as she's mostly in shadow. Β Min, however, looks a little squint. Β Her body is fine (though again, the clothing isn't quite right, due to shading & contours - her jacket, regardless of what fabric it's made of, would not cinch in at the waist and flare out again, unless she's got a killer seamstress). Β As for her face, its not too bad, but her eyes should not be extending right to the edge of her face. Β Her nose is drawing too much attention since most of her face is in shade and her nose is in bright light. Β
Don't get me wrong - it's a nice picture & there are elements to it that I really like. Β The crown Rand is wearing looks very detailed and sits nicely on his head. Β Rand's head in general - very nice! It's got a nice medieval look to it, if that makes sense, which is nice, considering the similarities in that time period to the WoT universe.
I also like the dragon on his hand - it's only a little detail, in comparison to the rest of the image, but it's there and it's detailed and clearly not just shoved in at last minute. Β I like this mainly because it's so important to Rand's character - without this little detail, it could be any old dude with a sword, but the dragon makes it Rand al'Thor.

Thank you very much for the really detailed critique! You pointed out so many things that I had not originally pin-pointed as issues. Up until now my biggest issue was how terrible the colors ended up being. But after your post I am going to completely scrap this colored version and go back to the gray scale for more polishing and clean up. I spent the most time on Rand's face and the crown which is probably why it looks best in the entire painting. But I can't have a portion look alright and the rest look half done
I really appreciate your honest feedback and the time you take to always respond with very positive critiques. You don't just say it isn't quite right, you point out exactly what you know is wrong and how I can fix it or learn from my mistake. To me, that is the most valuable type of advice anyone can get!

Compared to your usual paintings, this one isn't that good. I don't like really criticizing but to me it seems like their heads are just too long and thin. Especially Min. But on the WIP picture I saw Rand's head done right. So it's just a matter of lightning and shadows that make it seem so thin. Min's head is still too thin and long in my opinion. But I'm not art specialist
I do like that I can kind of tell when this took place ( if memory serves me right. It's been a while since I've read that book ) He wears the crown and you can't see his other hand. Don't wanna spoil the rest to those who haven't read it

I rather like their faces, to be honest, shape-wise.Β Cadsuane seems a bit too manly for my mind's eye, but she looks ageless and that's a hard thing to paint! Min is gorgeous, and Rand looks wise but laughing again...

I really appreciate your honest feedback! You don't have to be an artist or an art specialist to provide such useful feedback and critique to anyone. I got disappointed with the painting once I started trying to add colors. I lost a lot of my original values and thought the only other problem was the colors. But you are right...the faces are way too thin and not tight.Β
I reverted back to the a gray scale copy and overlayed the colored layered but it looks shabby. Oh well, I guess I will work on it some other time in the future. I feel like I have regressed in the past month or so because I have not been practicing much
