commisssion for *illusionistsmemories

well, i'm very happy with this one! I hope you like it, *illusionistsmemories ! it's got quite a story behind it, here's the short version (provided by the customer):

Shadow Dancer is an Arabian mare that was kicked out from her herd, in the middle of winter, and was left to die. A figure appeared before her, and took her under his wing. The stallion decided to use her to complete his Mission. He has a bloodfeud with a certain stallion, and he's going to use Shadow Dancer to accomplish a torturous murder. She wants to rise above everyone in her old herd, so she is willing to do ANYTHING to become his Queen, including the murder. So her Master has taught everything in the arts of seduction and manipulation to accomplish this. Clouded with the illusions of the Crown, she is instructed in the arts of seduction, artistry, trickery, and execution.

Just a few notes - the black horse in the background is her Master. The blood in the water represents her new self, turned into a creature of manipulation and murder. The light shining down symbolizes her potential to be returned 'normal'.

did that video tut I gave you a while back help? shadows/highlights really are relatively simple, but it takes a bit of practice to get them right.

Love the muscle detail and the blue eyes.
The sand being pushed up by the hooves is my favorite. Random, but it's because I want to learn to do that, so that's the first detail that I noticed. Also, other people who put horses in sand don't do that, so great attention to detail.

higtar123 [2011-01-01 19:05:32 +0000 UTC]

how do you get the whole thing to be like blue? cause the original pictures are light?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

erraticstudios In reply to higtar123 [2011-01-01 20:00:42 +0000 UTC]

I use plenty of Adjustment Layers, basically. I start with adding some Curves, Color Balance and Brightness/Contrast adjustment layers to the background, and the same for the horse and sky to make sure everything matches. Once the manip is finished, I then make a new layer right above everything else, and fill it with a solid blue, and I then set the blending mode to Soft Light.

May I ask how you you draw the white 'lines' around and on the horse? I'm rubbish, I just cant get them right :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

erraticstudios In reply to D-A-L-L-I-A-N-C-E [2011-01-01 19:59:00 +0000 UTC]

for the outline, I just use a 2px hard round brush, set on White, and basically just zoom in a lot and paint around the horses edges. It takes a bit of practice to get it right, haha.
I then get a soft large Eraser on 20% opacity and sort of fade some of the outline areas (for example, on this one, the outline is fainter on the hooves, stomach and on a bit of the back legs).

(The purpose of the fading is to make sure that the outline isn't too overwhelming )

Hey I have a question, I know you use the Tablet for the mane and tail, but how do you get them to look the way they do? Like with the shading and all. I've tried, but I truly suck.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

erraticstudios In reply to RogueSpirit1997 [2011-01-01 19:56:58 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry too much, it takes a lot of time to get used to painting with a tablet.
For white manes and tails, I actually start with a base that is a very dark orange/yellow, like a dark brown. I find it's easier, and that way I actually don't have to paint in lowlights. Instead, I spend ages painting in different light colors (grey, white, etc) over the base to get it to look the way I do. XD
