Description
Whew! FINALLY. I've been busy, but mostly. . .I can just be a lazy arse sometimes. This being the case. I've been telling people I'll make a digital coloring tut for well about a year now. XD Well. . . it's here! Yay!I didn't go into every finite detail of my painting technique simply because that would have been tedium just to read, let alone follow (not to mention the time it would have taken to put it together). What I've included in this tuturial are a number of simple steps and a few tips that will get you well on the way to coloring your sketches and lineart digitally in photoshop. Many of these techniques will apply similarly in programs like OC and Painter.
While some of this might be old news to the more veteran of digital painters, I really hope this can be helpful to those who are just starting out or are struggling with painting on the computer. Give it a try, and have fun!
Much
**Edit** Why won't DA let us have preview images anymore? It's so tacky! I had this great preview all ready and everything. . .

yes I know what you say finally I got one *really happy* is very good for soft shading and watercolor and is you don't want to get mad and punch the scanner sometimes but when you make CG drawings there's no use of it really
but if you really need one you can find some that are cheaper
there are many other tablets than Wacom that cost $100 or so and work just fine
and about the opacity you can find it in Photoshop after you press the paint tool on the top of the screen under the basic toolbars
when you lower the opacity the brush becomes smother

This tutorial is awesome, very easy to follow. And like I said, I learned a lot lol.

I have Painter X, so would the brush you used be the airbrush tool then? And does the "lifting-the-lineart" to a seperate layer work in Painter? Also, what do you use to blend? I would love to experiment with this method but since I have a different program I don't know where to start!!

Etoli In reply to lonely-waltz [2008-11-21 01:27:19 +0000 UTC]
Painter is a little bit different. I struggled with finding a comparable brush in that program, but the one I did enjoy using were the oil brush varieties. Blending could be achieved quite nicely with those.

Wow! That was huge and really helpful, if I knew better what you were talking about. Guess it's time for me to start trying to color my drawings in ps, although traditional ways are easier (color pencils ) Faved for later reference, and thanks a lot!

What kind of scanner do you use? Mine doesn't pick up pencil lines so well, I have to almost always use ink. What do you recommend?

Etoli In reply to Furrama [2008-09-27 00:50:18 +0000 UTC]
I definitely recommend the HP line of products. Their basic scanner (mine is the scanjet 3970) has worked worderfully for me.

hmmm i see this complaint around a lot and i give the same advice to all.. if its not picking up your lighter lines so well just place a black paper behind the original drawing.. thickness of the paper will vary the results.. hope it helps..

Thank you so much for this. I'm a student who's just learning the ropes in Photoshop, and I've found this immensely helpful. Granted, it's still not easy, but this had made my attempts at digital painting a lot more bearable.

Fantastic tutorial here, I plan on using except there are a few questions that I would like to ask.
I dont have CS, will that be a problem?
I have started using this tutorial and it all went well up to the selecting the lineart and the darker pixels...It didnt work at all, for some reason it would just continually selcet the whole image and not my lineart. should i make the lineart darker for photoshop to pick it up?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Etoli In reply to crumpet-fiend [2008-09-19 00:46:34 +0000 UTC]
Well, darkening the lineart should not be the issue. Photoshop should be recognizing any and all pixel data regardless of value range. This could be a cs feature, I'm not entirely sure. They make these little changes between the different versions, and sometimes they are subtle things that I don't notice (and will frustrate people trying to use older versions with this tutorial).
Perhaps try googling your ps question?

Hey, what to do you use to make your linework? Is it just a regular pencil? I always have problems with mine, it just looks so sloppy and I want to refine it.
