This is sweet, I've been starting out with commissions lately and was wondering the best route to keep this going smoothly when I know I'll be accepting payment for adult work. Basically, don't mention anything about the adult artwork anywhere in the transaction?

umm what is adult commission and why do you and artist get in trouble for it? ._. i am very sorry if this is silly question >.< but please answer ;n;

Adult commissions are porn commissions. Paypal has it in their policy that you can't use their service to be paid for adult "services" including art. So, by bluntly saying "This payment is for my tentacle porn commission" can get the artist in trouble because it goes against their ToS.

I feel noobish for asking this but when I tried to buy some points from DA with this, it said that I needed a credit card. I'm not sure if this is just DAs way of working things or if I'm doing something wrong.
I have a different currency so I'm not sure how to go about things. Can you help?

I think so. I was 16 when I created mine, but that was over 7 years ago (omg getting old ). You can always give it a try, as long as you have a bank account it should work

Thank you so much for this tutorial! It's understandable and really useful!
I have one question though (which is totally ok if you don't know the answer to )
It's of course trivial that you need to have a bank account linked. But let's say.. with my case I could only link mine in March.
Could it be possible for me to get money to my PayPal account before that?
Damn... I'm bad at explaining. So what I mean is, can someone actually get money on their account BEFORE connecting in to their bank or credit card?

"So what I mean is, can someone actually get money on their account BEFORE connecting in to their bank or credit card?"
I wish I could answer this, but I sadly don't know the answer. You might want to go to Paypal's helpdesk and ask! ^__^

Oh my god, thank you so much for making this.. I have a lot of trouble with this as well.
However, I have always asked my commissioners to select "Services" as the type of payment as it doesnt ask me to print a shipping label to prove that I am sending them something. I have heard other artists in the past have had troubles with giving the person their picture, and then they claim they never got it as it was never 'shipped' thus getting their money back. Dont know if this might be a problem or not.
Either way thank you, I will likely link this to users often.

You should also mention the issue with Paypal fees (totally annoying!) I know most artists now include the fee with the price of their image, and there's also a Paypal calculator here - [link]
Some people pay under Personal > Gift (so that there is no fee) but that's NOT recommended as it's against the rules. However, I've found getting people to pay via Personal > Payment Owed will include the fee in the transaction so that you (the artist) will receive the full amount of money without having a little taken out from Paypal fees.
This is a really useful tutorial though, I'll definitely be pointing people towards it when they're unfamiliar with how Paypal works haha.

Hey Maygikal!
The reason I updated the tutorial is because I used to say "Send it as a gift" to avoid the fees. But, since you can't "refund" a gift you can get in trouble.
Let's say, you pay me $10 for a commission and you send it as a gift. Months later, I still haven't finished your commission and you want your money back. I keep refusing to reply to your many notes, how do you get your money? You can request your money back through Paypal! You can't when you send the money as a gift, so it's better to send it as "goods" or "Services" : )
I haven't used the Payment owed very much. I've noticed most people are too greedy to want to pay for the fees themselves ^__^'
You are not allowed to ask extra for fees. If they find out they will suspend your account. Something you don't want to happen n-n'

heartleaved In reply to etuix [2011-12-05 22:37:05 +0000 UTC]
Personal > Payment Owed isn't a gift though! But it does have the same effect as a gift (that you can't refund it or request for a refund haha). I think it's OK to use if you trust the person (I know a lot of people probably commission things from their friends, so in that case I think it'd be OK to use) but you're right, in other business transactions I'd probably just use goods or services.
Really?! I didn't know that! Lmao what ... how does that make any sense. What if you just include the price of the fee inside of your commission cost, anyway? I know a lot of artists do that - I don't think a lot of them know that you could get your account suspended over it.

I am pretty sure you can select that none of your personal info is sent along with the paypal payment.
When paying someone they will receive your shipping info. When receiving money they won't see any of your personal info.

etuix In reply to Meezel [2011-11-11 00:16:30 +0000 UTC]
You'll have to go see if you can do it in your personal preferences : )
I've never had a case that people abused the personal information they can see when you send a payment. It's only your address that shows : )

Meezel In reply to etuix [2011-11-11 00:23:45 +0000 UTC]
I can't seem to find that, but there's a personal information place. The only option I have is to change me name, but I'd have to register that it's a real name. So that doesn't work.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
etuix In reply to Meezel [2011-11-11 01:12:16 +0000 UTC]
Why don't you want to use your real name? Everyone does for paypal, you should see it as an online bank in a way that allows you to transfer money to people easily.
You need to use your real name anyway.
I used my nickname/short (Maggie) for my Paypal and it was a pain in the rear to get my account activated because my nickname didn't match my full first name on my bank account card
No one cares about the full names or addresses shown in the Paypal notes. You will need to give an address anyway if you plan on using your account to order stuff : )

Just a question, when you say if you receive too many gifts your account might be suspended, does that mean the amount of gifts you've ever received ever or in a certain amount of time? ; v ;

etuix In reply to ilaeious [2011-11-09 00:58:26 +0000 UTC]
Don't worry about the gifts. I should update this tutorial sometime.
It's better to just send it as a product/service than as a gift, then you can always refund people or request a refund if you send money yourself
Hope this clears it up a bit :3

Is there a way for the seller to decide how the money is sent, other than just asking ? I am thinking of opening commissions and have this terrible fear of being tricked, I heard stories that say people can just withdraw their payment even after you recieved it, even months after, pretending you never sent the goods, even if you did. :S
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
etuix In reply to Lys-Antigone [2011-12-14 18:16:49 +0000 UTC]
You can send an invoice, basically requesting the money. All you need is their paypal email address, and for them to accept the payment invoice when they receive it.
I've personally never been tricked, and I've been doing commissions for at least 6 years now

Ask your commissioners to send it as product/service though, not as a gift. Then it's easier to refund people just in case : )
