Description Anima: Banshee

The mysterious and deadly banshee appear in bodies of water, usually alongside rare-travelled roads. Their supple limbs, long flowing hair, and barely-concealing clothing give no clue to their origins.Β Β Most folk believe them to be traumatized survivors of a shipwreck upon first sight, but quickly learn that they are horrors of another kind. The Banshee herald from days long forgotten, spawned of a lady spurned, and are whispered to be heralders of Death and Sorrow.

She was a Fae of the water, a female nymph who had a human-like upper-body, but had the lower body of a fish. She had spent her childhood days admiring those who lived on land with a jealousy most fierce. She wanted nothing more than to be like them, and to live among them.

The Water Gods, displeased with her ignorance of her own race and lineage, thought to punish her by giving her a pair of legs, but left her bound to the water, as all Water Fae were. It was thus that she was granted a pair of long shapely legs, but no ability to move out of the sea's water, able to go only as far as the tides would allow her. She was ridiculed by all Water fae; some thought her ignorant of their superior race, others pitied her for her obsession.

Determined to make the best of her so-called gift, she would stand or sit in the tides of the water on the shores where many humans lived. The women that passed scorned her behind darted glances and whispers behind hands, for she was still dressed as a nymph. Her thin clothing, perpetually wet, clung to her curves, leaving little to the imagination. Men often came to court the mysterious beauty that appeared only in the wet sands and rocks, unwilling to go with them whenever they called.

One handsome fellow fell deeply in love with her, and came to court her each day with a handful of flowers from the field he worked near. In the months that passed, her hair grew spectacularly long and red from her love for him. She could not bear to tell him she was ashamed of her race as a Fae, and that it kept her from being with him truly. However, when he learned of her secret, he never returned to her, and she was left sitting on the shores waiting for weeks. She sang haunting and lonely songs, laced with the magic of her sadness, that drew men to her in the night, where she would lead them to their underwater deaths.

One night, she disappeared and was never seen by the townsfolk again. She had sunken deep to the rocky depths of the sea, and given birth to thousands of Banshee to carry on her self-inflicted curse. Sing, draw men to you, kill them, for they will never love you, and it is the only pleasure you may obtain.

And so the Banshee became symbols of death, heralding the death of a man with their song in the night. Men were known to die with a dreamy look in their eyes, as if the most beautiful woman in the world had come to lead him to paradise, and they were none the wiser.

It's not rough writing at all. Could do with a bit of streamlining but it's not bad at all. In fact, I thought the first sentence was the sentence of a different story - I almost didn't read on because it didn't interest me, but the rest was much, much better. It was very much a hardened fairy-tale and flowed nicely, and I can't really say too much else about it. Liked it!
