Eh, Otherkin isn't that big of a deal to me honestly. I find the concept quite odd, but I'm fine if someone identifies with the term. As long as if they don't use it too be a jerk or something I don't see the point in getting worked up cause of it.

Yeeeah, about that, I have a BS in biochemistry and cell biology, and an MS in physiology. I still identify as otherkin. But in public and on the job, I do use proper discretion and social etiquette.

There are physical things (keyword: physical) that line up with time periods and events in several religions. True, there are physical (key word physical) that may line up but there are other parts of a religion that may not be totally true. One of which being how in the bible, lets take that flood example from earlier. how could the higher ups predict it from happening and how come the rest of humanity didn't listen? I hope y'all realize that identifying as a god or fictional character or animal doesn't make you any of those things, it just makes you delusional, mate.
Plus, whenever people identify with something, it's something conventionally cool/attractive. Sure, you'll see tonnes of people identifying as foxes, bunnies, demigods, etc., but you don't see anyone identify as an ant, or a mosquito, or a leech. Why? Cos it's an ego boost. It feels GREAT to identify as a fox, dog, god, etc. These people clearly didn't have enough love/support as a child, so they clung to this as a means to inflate what little ego they had left. I want to debate this, but I know it'll only result in more headaches for me, so let me say this- it's just a phase, man. You'll grow out of it. Eventually, a point in your life will come where you'll realize, 'hey, I'm not a dog' or 'wait a second, I am not an anime character after all!' In fact, I do not know of a single "unreputable" person who identifies as otherkin. And I'm putting tumblr aside here, since tumblrkin are not serious otherkin. Tumblr is widely misinformed about otherkinity.

But some teens, on tumblr especially, turned otherkinity into a trend and bulldozed all over our established community and our terms and definitions. They warp the meaning of otherkinity to their own likings and, for the most part, act immature when anyone tries to correct or educate them.
What you are probably referring to is that nounself and neogender nonsense (like bun/bunself and so on), which was started by trolls. As I said in my first comment, tumblr is filled with these teens, trolls and misinformation. Of course, people like to believe that crap and use it against us. It's just hate fuel.
So no, the definition of otherkin hasn't changed. The term, along with the definition, is around 50 years old now and won't just change, even if some kids on the internet decide it's cool to shit on it and use it as a trend. Otherkinity is an identity belief, but it has nothing to do with gender identity. I would know, I'm transgender as well as otherkin and these two things don't connect at all.
