Remember seeing this beast in Guam during April Team Spirit 1983. This plane is (was) haunted, many stories about this plane. I saw it smoke the pilots out during klaxon alarm and saw it roll back at the alert pad and run into fence with it's tail. During the night the red lights would come on by itself. even a security guard got scared shot up his truck on the roof with M16.
Oh ya them good old days.
I was on TDY from Barksdale AFB with G-models loading Navy Mines, that's right Navy Mines. We were first B-52 Load Team to do so! Base newspaper has pictures of this successful feat.
then I was the Team Chief on the SLC Team. My crew and I were the first.

Glad I had a photo of this jet that you had seen while it was still active! It is nice to meet another USAF maintainer on DA!

Did you ever happen to catch 56-0689? She's now on display at Duxford and it would be nice to see some images of her when in service.

You're welcome. Closest I've ever come to seeing a "D" is either on the news (Vietnam War) or the Revell/Monogram kit.

Reminds me of the scene in "Dr. Strangelove" when George C. Scott's character is describing how a good B-52 pilot can fly a Buff to the President. Fighter jocks aren't the only hot dogs in the Air Force!

Yeah... I was happy to be in a SAC missile and bomber base on my first assignment:

I got to see a side of the USAF that is not seen anymore!

I love the old Tall Tails. Didn't get to see them too many times as a kid, but my most vivid memory of any B-52 was driving with my folks through central Wyoming in 1982. One of these came over at about 3000 feet AGL over the car--tall tail D with a black belly. Dad pulled over because he seriously thought we were going to see a crash. The BUFF driver pulled up over a ridge in the distance and was gone just like that.
It was one of those things you never forget. Seeing these big beasts is always a treat.

Yeah, I was 'bombed' by a B-52G or H model when I was driving between Lincoln NB and Salina KS off US 81 in 1982. I swear I saw the wing tips out of either side window of my car...
