Next, Elina makes a quick-but-thorough perusal of the maps and diagrams in her possession. Immediately drawing her attention is a map of the city-state of Dernhem and its bordering realm, accompanied by a scribbling of notes pertaining to threats to the local populace and the sovereignty of the Magistracy. The notes are penned, Elina believes, by Luther, with additions by Theonius and Captain Tarkin. Of most interest to her are a series of plagues moving almost regularly into Dernhem down the trade road from the northern settlements around the city of Hahn, including the outbreak of Cradlerot Plague that decimated the village of Eiger when Elina was a child. But the notes suggest that even with small hordes of wormloat gremlins terrorizing the surrounding realm, the Cradlerot outbreak was relatively minor in its affects in Dernhem proper where continual waves of Brittling Fever and the Swallowchills have claimed hundreds of lives throughout the countryside roughly every five years.
Besides the recorded plagues, incidents of brigandage along the western road south of Merwood have been tallied from the reports of road patrols that have grown more infrequent as Dernhem's resources have fagged. The Scholar's interest piques when she recognizes the work of several of Luther's agents operating along the troubled western reach, including Valerin Caldwyre and Deirdre of the Wood, whose Fadings are both present not ten farlings from where she studies. The notes speak of a constant war being waged back and forth, from the very gates of Dernhem city out almost to the bridge over the River Varde. Also from the west have come infestations, vermin and pestilence blown on fierce winds from the dusty lost lands into the Mitesceru Family Estate and the farmlands protected by Dernhem. Jackrats have expanded in colonies, Scourge-heggers have destroyed cropland, and Sleeper's Bane plants have assailed the gardens and paths in vast numbers, to say nothing of the less hidden and potentially more troublesome menaces of Red Mold and Frostbats bringing devastation to grain and livestock.
To the south lies the threat of economic domination by the Merchant Princes of Port Sessen and their mercenary forces, with the Family Aliandis placed as a strategic buffer, albeit one eager to extend its own influence into Dernhem's markets. Cutthroat mercantilism, sabotage, and murder have ever plagued the southern trade routes and sapped the profits from all but the most determined and powerful of merchant enterprises, and the notes scribbled in the map's margins and on reverse pages paint a grim, bloody picture to dot the land between Elina's home at the Villios Family Estate and the northern reaches of the Aliandis Family lands to the south.

Elina: Conclusion and theory; Man, our country's got problems....
I like the background fill-in here in the narrative. It's a nice glimpse into the world beyond the single city, and help ups some of the tension. and the more detailed bit of map behind Elina is pretty cool too.

I'm loving the 'studious' Elina (although, I for one, wouldn't mind if she did discover the nude sauna and rope-emporium).

So these are the troubles that are plaguing Dernhem. Something that could cause trouble that widespread would have to be pretty powerful. That gives us some idea why Team Maladyne would go to the lengths that they are to combat these troubles.
At least I'm assuming that Operation Magic Mirror is an example of outside-the-box thinking and not the standard response to highway robbery and plagues.

Maladyne sees the Harbinger as the "magic bullet," as it were. How well that may function remains to be seen, but indications from the past are that against the highway robbers, the Harbinger should fare very well. Plagues are another matter, but it's hard to doubt a flying, super-armored woman with lightning, bladed dreadlocks, and a turkey-killer sword of doom...
The next page will show a bit more clearly why and how these rather commonplace problems are actually much more difficult than one would expect.

Well after months of perusing comments and captions for the tiniest of hints, now it's like the floodgates have burst open. If it wasn't for distractions like having a job I'd have my own table full of maps and hints. Suffice to say, I'm liking this part a lot and hey, I've scarcely noticed that this makes 12 straight PG-13 images ... is that a Demon's Due record?

Your perusing will probably give you some good insight into what is being said more than if you hadn't spent that time and effort. In spite of the fact that I'm throwing some specifics into the descriptions, there's still a lot of vagueness to it all, leaving room for the connections you've sought and made to make a big difference. Give it another ten pages and you should see some real cerebral sparks flying, as it were.
And, regarding the PG-13-ness of the images, I think the trend will last for another handful, unless for some strange reason Elina decides to take a bath in the heretofore unseen Jervil's Sauna and Steamroom...

What's interesting is that we're eight chapters in and only now getting some real backstory on where this fantasy story takes place, something you usually see right in the prologue.

Some facts will definitely be shared before this via the narrative and the Prologue pages for each chapter, along with the expanded pages that I can throw in here and there a'la Deirdre in the Fair Harvest Inn as seen in the Rats revision pages. But, yeah, this bit here will set a lot of things straight, and leave a couple more glaring questions unanswered. When it's done, at least we'll know what it is we still need to know for the story to be completed.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that it was a bad thing. It's a very unique style of storytelling, especially among fantasy, and I'm amazed it's worked so well.

No, I didn't take it that way (bad). I just intend to take a bit of the weight off of this section and distribute it throughout the first few chapters as I work through the revision. If nothing else, it will give things a bit more depth and allow for a few alternate viewpoints on some specific (probably fun) scenes.

By the way, I'd suggest linking your map to this image if you still have it somewhere online.

I'm not in a position to do that right now, but I certainly will. It's in the journal linked in the Artist Comments, I'm fairly certain.
