**********************************************************

Memories of her childhood with younger sister Elina roll through Avora's mind easily and readily; so little has changed in the estate gardens from that time thanks to the magical forces at work. But where a few hours ago Avora experienced a sense of disapproval for this enchantment, she now recognizes the well of strength these gardens potentially present to those who seek them out. "An ideal," she says aloud. "All about is ever changing, as life provides, and demands. But here one finds... perhaps not the ideal so much as an ideal, and that's a powerful thing. No wonder the pilgrimages to these gardens still continue, even when the manor itself is empty."

The sun dips lower, and Avora finds her feet now wandering to match her drifting stream of memories. Years ago there was a place in the gardens that their uncle had insisted the two young girls see, and though the deep resentment of Avora's scandalous liaison also found its roots in the place, the wizardess steers toward the nearby garden wall. "It's been too long," she says, "since I listened to the joy of the Chorus Garden." Yes, there had been joy there, and her pace grows eager and light as the wizardess follows the polished path toward an open archway in the barrier of finely cut stone blocks.

**********************************************************

The sketchy details of Avora's young life have been rather wonderfully inspired for me by the imagination and contributions of a fellow deviant. Those contributions will come to light soon in a supplemental publication that I'm really excited about, but of which I can't speak more at the moment. Regardless, thank you, "fellow deviant."

Avora was drawn using the reference material provided by the work of Viator-Defessus and the model we call "Ava." This image was rather unusual because it offered me a chance (as did the reference) to draw a different, normally unseen side of Avora Villios, and that was a lot of fun.

Enjoy!

Note: Twisted Plot and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones this kind of treatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

"I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar."

It is nice to get to see a somewhat softer side to Avora as it looks like she is really anticipating reliving some fond memories (I'm thinking that her last 10 yrs don't feature a lot of them) and the text continues the build up with her quick and eager pace as the sun goes down. What could possibly go wrong now. Although, I am somewhat suspicious of her change of heart with respect to the enchanted garden.

No Reaver is going to spear her in the next moment, thank heaven.

Yeah, I'm glad you're enjoying this brief glimpse at Avora's soft side. We'll get a rough glimpse of her last ten years in just a few more pages, and you're right that they were not full of "fondness." Regarding the garden, viewed in its entirety, it's entirely just too much in her view, but a few bright corners of it aren't weighed down in excess. This spot she's steering toward is one of the latter.

Or, rather it was one of the latter.

She's confident her cheekbones will defend her from any threat which arises. Nicely done, she's gorgeous!

Her cheekbones and her body in profile, I think. Thanks!

And once again we see the woman's own agency in her downfall, as is the formula. How tragically poetic that Avora's nostalgic yearning for the life she was forced to leave will serve as her second undoing.

Yes, that is indeed the formula. There are women in this story who are less instrumental in their own downfall, but they aren't occupying the spotlight. Of course, that's not to say that any particular downfall/victimization is justified by the actions of the female characters, but that the characters get into those situations by taking an active, assertive role in potentially dangerous things. In essence, they "get out," but they do so swinging, hitting high fly balls to center, or trying to steal home, as it were. Thanks for the comment!

Unfortunately, when it comes to Demon's Due's "one strike and you're out" rule, the women don't get the luxury of simply croaking it, like the men. They do the walk of shame, in hard, iron restraints.

Yes, it's just really too bad for them... Too, too bad...

Velmalina is Avora's little sister?  When did that happen?  Seriously, is this breaking news, or did I just miss it in an earlier comment?  Were they close as children?  Did Avora mercilessly tease Velmalina for being such a geeky little nerd?  Were Velmalina's childhood glasses the really nerdy kind with wing-shaped frames?  Did they play "Rescue the Princess" with Avora tying Velmalina to trees in the garden (then forgetting about her and running off with her other friends to watch young Luther and young Tarkin training with the swordmaster and getting all... sweaty)?
  Inquiring minds want to know!

Yes, the "sisters" (half-sisters, actually) bit was shared occasionally along the way, including in the sixth paragraph of this page:

.

It was stated a few times in Elina's studies in that chapter, come to think of it. Regarding the misadventures of the two Villios daughters, Avora was every bit as much the "nerdy type" as Elina in her younger years, though she blossomed into a less overtly nerdy but decisively intelligent young woman before the scandal that set her feet on her present day course. Both took after their intellectual uncle (their mother and he were siblings, I'm thinking). Tarkin is a transplant to Dernhem from the Aliandis household with the High Lady Drea, so he didn't show up until after Avora had left the area in remorse and Elina was deciding to pursue the Scholarly life herself.

But, yes, Luther has always been sweaty, and as has been suggested by one of the folks who has helped with editing, it is likely that he and Elina would have been a match given that the two were both unmarried nobility of a "proper" age (I think he's about 14 years older than she) from the two main noble families in the area. Once Avora was physically quickened, however, it is likely that she would have taken Elina's place in that role had she not left on her ten year journey of self-discovery that will be outlined a bit better in upcoming pages of the story.

Yes, yes, that's all well and good, but the glasses!  What about the glasses?  Did teenage Velmalina—I mean Elina—wear nerdy, wing-tip glasses?  'Cause that would be hot!
