Before she can follow up that train of thought, Avora hears in echo the whispered, shattered words of the Chorus Garden’s central tree behind her. What of those who can think of nothing else…?
Closing her eyes, the wizardess breathes deeply, revisiting in an instant all of the pain and fear and terror to which she was subjected in her ordeal on the Isle of Selva and over which she triumphed. “If I didn’t know better,” she speaks loud enough to cast her voice across the enclosure, “I’d say this is my past come back to haunt me, almost in counter-vengeance if there is such a thing. But since I know that Attar is truly dead and gone, this is all the work of some other mischief-maker, one who has not learned to pay the price of his sorceries responsibly.”

Gazing upwards, Avora’s eyes fall on the gardener’s shed, its door left open and its interior in shadow. “Perhaps your secrets lie therein, but I’ll be a fool if I’m just going to walk in there, Sorcerer. Have you left no Fading as Maladyne did through which to converse with visitors to your greenhouse creation? Surely, with all of your extensive web-laying here, you had to guess that others would be drawn to it, though you may not have been expecting me, with a will to put an end to it.”

The garden is mostly silent in answer; the growing mist quiets the drone of bees as the sun finally disappears below the western treetops. “Very well,” Avora says evenly. “I have proclaimed myself here in your den, Sorcerer. You make your move, and I will make mine.” Holding her position next to the table, Avora listens for the slightest sound to break the muted silence, words of enchantment spoken, magical curses brought to bear—none of them will outdo the speed, malice, and power of the Wand of Antreatos in her grip. But only the growing mist answers her, until the wizardess considers her sense of the multiple layers of sorcery laid over all the enclosure, and she regards the mists with a more wary eye.
