Description
Westbury City Fire Department. The department is a combination department located in Liberty County. The City is a highly dense 2 square miles and also serves as the county seat. The Westbury City Fire Department was founded in the 1960s as the career component to supplement the volunteer companies that protected the city. The 2 volunteer companies were the Goodwill Steam Engine Company and the Citizens Hook, Ladder and Hose Company. Today, there is only 1 volunteer association left and is active only out of the Goodwill Steam Engine Firehouse in North Westbury.Staffing: The department is mostly staffed by full and part time members. Engine 5-1 and Ladder 5 are located in the downtown section of the city and serve the downtown area and South Westbury. Both companies are staffed with an officer and 3. The Fire Official is also quartered here. Downtown does not have any volunteer members and its former volunteer association was abolished in late 2009. Engine 5-2 is the engine primarily utilized by the volunteers with fluctuating staffing but never less then 3 per county staffing policies. Squad 5 is staffed by paid members and is staffed with an officer and 3. Each tour falls under the command of an on duty Battalion Chief as well as the Chief of Department. Also on duty is a Safety Officer who responds on all fires and major emergencies and a Fire Official.
All full and part time members are trained to the EMT-B level at minimum and also must posses their fire official licenses which includes fire investigation. Outside of answering alarms, on duty members are tasked with training, fire investigation follow ups, building inspections, permitting for events requiring pyrotechnics, community relations and public education. To be considered for employment, candidates must apply with experience and must meet hiring requirements set forth by the city. Westbury City is not a New Liberty Civil Service agency and runs its own testing and hiring process. Currently, the department is still recovering from financial and mismanagement issues, the previous mayor was no fan of the fire department in her city. Squad 5 is the newest addition to the fleet. After a year long study by a third party group, it was found that the department needed to reevaluate its technical rescue capabilities and set forth to build an "all in one" unit. The squad was delivered in January 2023. In 2022 the department answered 1642 alarms and operated at 73 All Hands or greater fires.
