Description Mariel "Storm" Gullwhacker, the heroine of Tales of Redwall book 4. This is how I imgained her to look :3

In case someone wonders, her rather unique title came from her weapon (the knotted rope), which she called the Gullwhachker, because she used it to beat a bunch of Seagulls

I don't know, where she is supposed to be. I quess it's supposed to be in Fort Bladegirt. IDK XD

Mariel sure knows how to use the Gullwhacker! I already pity Gabool! I just begun the book yesterday; that rat is really something!

Hehehe n.n Yeah, she surely knows 83
I read all 10 first books of Redwall in a row, before I finally started to see some sad facts about them X3 But the first few books I read were awesome 83 Including Mariel

The first one I read (about Martin, if I remember rightly) left me both saddened (Rose's death) and terrified (the final scene, where one piratre is mad and the other dead).
Regrettably, here they are very difficult to find and ther are no tranlslations, either.

Martin the Warrior is actually the 6th book in the series, but yeah, that is one of the better ones :3 (and first ones I read).
They have only translated the 10 first books here and they can only be found on flea markets and such, so hard to find in here too (except libraries). But if you don't mind english as language, they can be found quit well in online stores such as play.com or Amazon :3 I got few books from there myself.

Then do get from there n.n If you are not used to web shopping, those sites are fairly safe :3 Just find a seller with good feedback.
And if I may suggest, first two books are really good ones n.n Redwall and Mossflower :3

One thing I am sure of. Remember The Secret of Nimh? If Jenner, the villain rat of the movie meets Mariel, he's going to need teeth!

Depends on which Jenner you talk of I have read the book and saw the film and they are QUITE different XD In the book Jenner isn't evil at all :3 He isn't even directly in the book X3

But yeah, the movie is awesome <3 One of my favorites~

Movie's Jenner. I never read the book, alas. She just encountered the jester hare in the book. At this point she has one gull, several toads and a squirrel to her credit with the Gullwhacker.

FireRai In reply to springheel [2012-10-17 21:57:55 +0000 UTC]

I suggest reading it :3 It enlightens few things not given in the movie, but still is pretty much it's own story, as it is so different.
Oh, I think I remember that one n.n
But what really drove me away from Redwall series was the horribly black-and-white view of the world and its inhabitants. Good animals (mice, squirrels, badgers and others) were ALWAYS good, noble, kind and friendly, able to do flawless teamwork and usually learning art of warfare in a matter of days to be able to stand against a trained army. And the vermin (rats, foxes, ferrets etc.) were ALWAYS stupid, evil, greedy and uncooperative, lead by a charismatic, but cruel leader. Always the same plot, same characters with different names and a little bit different time period in monastery's history. I kinda grw tired of it and annoyed X3 There were almost never any real exceptions to this rule...there even was a ferret raised by the Redwall folk in Outcast's in Redwall and in that book they clearly state that evil is inheritary and morality is forget to the creature's core by birth...which I find stupid.

I agree. You find more rounded characetrs in Spellsinger series; beside, the cliche of the 'traditional' evils critters fell to the abyss ages ago. Just check some animated shows (like the new MLP), where the 'evil' villain is almost at once engulfed by sympathy from the viewers and depicted in a really charming light.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireRai In reply to springheel [2012-10-17 23:57:12 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! In that show, despite just the seasons first episodes having real villains, they have been interesting. They are not just "this character evil because he is evil since evil is evil ha ha ha", but they actually have a story behind them. Nightmare Moon was cool in the way that one would immediately think that there is no evil pony in the world and them they shoot that dark character to the viewers to show that they can do it. It was a good choise.
Of course, sometimes it works to have a character, who is evil just for the sake of it. Not all characters should be complicated and have a deep meaning to all their actions and behaviour. But to Redwall's critic I'd say that it wouldn't hurt that at least SOME characters have it XDD

springheel In reply to FireRai [2012-10-18 16:23:07 +0000 UTC]

I fully agree. I think that the author was trapped too tightly in the frame of his stories; The Abbey is too small a place to be almost exclusiverly the axis of so many sories. Check, for example, the Spellsinger series; all their adventures begin on Lynchbanny, their town but, max for two or three chapters... they don't mention the place till the very end of the books. Besides, Redwall is a bit too "close to earth"; interesting, but limited by a reality absent of magic and the inherent rigidity of the chars psiques and their filiation: Rat, bad guy; mouse, good guy; hare, comic relief... and so forth.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireRai In reply to springheel [2012-10-18 21:54:07 +0000 UTC]

Total agreement here. Even though some of the stories do focus on events outside the Abbey, the author still very rarely dares to leave it alone. For example in Mattimeo, when the heroes go to rescue the kids from the slavers in a new place, a group of Ravens attack the Abbey itself. Two plotlines going for at once. Which is not a bad thing but....how come every damn evil warlord thinks that Redwall Abbey is worth conquering? DD If nothing else, history should speak against such attampets in books that take place on later years XD
I agree on the lack of magic too. It's not a bad choise, but... well, I can't explain, but I'd still prefer at least somekind of magical elements :3
Also, have you noticed while reading the books that good guys/main characters hardly ever direclty defeat the main villain? It is usually always killed in second-hand event. Cluny got crushed by the bell, Slagar fell to the pit and Feragho and Swartt (Despite being thrown) fell to their deaths. The "big kill" in the story is never directly "show" X3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

springheel In reply to FireRai [2012-10-19 17:15:03 +0000 UTC]

I also like some unexpected ingredient, such as magic (or, at least, something out of the common mold).
Now, that "second hands" death are really curious, I agree. The climax of a literary piece must pit the main characters; otherwise, what the heck are they doing?
Language: Some of the dialects are really hard to follow. The moles slang is really confusing, for instance.
Humor: Almost absent and always brief. Somehow, it ends resembling the movie "The name of the rose", in more than one sense.
And villains never have a chance of redemption, though what I really dislike is the clichΓ©. A case I like to point as a magnificent exception, is the set of tales by E.T.A. Hoffmann. In one, a snake is the heroine; in another, a flea, in another yet, a goblin.
One very interesting piece is Mercedes Lackey's "Mage Wars" trilogy: Furry chars, magic, lots of humor, action excellently written and deepening in just a few issues (relationship between characters, secondary plots that doesn't mingle with the main line)
What I must say, though, is that Mr. Jacques had a really good writing style and his descriptions are of the best rate.

FireRai In reply to springheel [2012-10-23 14:15:14 +0000 UTC]

Indeed X3 If the main characters don't get to defeat the villain, what was their point? XD
And yes, the mole dialect was horrible x.x Gladly it was a bit more understandable in finnish.
His storytelling abilites and description are very good, yes :3 That is part why I manage to sit through 10 books in a row X3 Too bad his story content isn't too colorful in the end <:3

But that baseball game wouldn't be worth of watching since even if Redwall team would have never played it before, they'd suddenly find their hidden talents in the game and win the enemy vermin team, that would just argue and fight among themselves XD

FireRai In reply to springheel [2012-10-24 15:29:00 +0000 UTC]

No, they wouldn't, since they are good guys too X3 His judgements would be rather one sided. Though it still wouldn't matter, since the Redwall team would find the hidden talents (as I just said), the vermin team would kill half of their own players and their leader would try to flee from the sight and get throw off the cliff.
