you kind of can't . you can't make a pixel smaller than it already is. There is no such thing as a half pixel. You can resize using the same instructions here but instead of 200% you can go to 50% but things wont look the same anymore. When you're making pixels BIGGER you're not actually making the individual pixels LARGER per say..each pixel just becomes 4 pixels, or 16 pixels, etc.

I have a more advanced resizing issue that's been bugging me... If you have a layer with a non-rectangular filled image, this sometimes doesn't work correctly. For example, if you make a saymmetric arc, and don't put a rectangular background behind/around it (on the same layer), the arc will be uneven. A left stroke of pixels will be 3 pixels wide when made bigger, the right 'mirrored' stroke of similar pixel dimensions will be 5 pixels wide. If you know what I'm trying to tell

Any ideas on how to fix that? I'm actually surprised you didn't have this same issue with the heart image in this tutorial...

Thank you so much for this. There has to be a way to do this in gimp, and I will find it, and I will worship at your feet.

There is. When you resize an image, set Quality - Interpolation on Linear.

This helps a lot, before I had to scale my pixel art up in Illustrator and then export back to PS, thanks.

Why could I not find this two days ago when I REALLY, REALLY needed it?! It would have saved me hours of frustration!

But in all seriousness, this is great. I learned the hard way that resizing pixel art isn't *quite* as simple as using the resize tool. Thank you for this tutorial, and congratulations on the DD.

.... I still wish I found this sooner...

You can do the same thing on MS Paint, its less time too. (like, 5 seconds faster)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paddotk In reply to AvoryAzion [2012-04-25 08:15:08 +0000 UTC]

except Paint doesn't support transparency and you can't work in layers. For a lot of pixel art, therefore, it's not the best option.

AvoryAzion In reply to paddotk [2012-04-26 22:55:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, I like MS Paint...

And I don't have anything else except GIMP in which I only know like 2-3 things on it SO

Yeah.

I've never used Gimp myself but doesn't that program also work with layers? If you would learn to use just layer usage, it would help you a lot

This is one awesome tutorial, and an amazing DD, too! I've done small pixel pieces...for my pixel art account, then wished they were bigger, but had NO idea how to re-size them and still have them crisp pixel art without just re-doing them from scratch again, causing me to just give up on them completely. This tutorial and information...it is a total life saver for those types of projects! Thank you so much for sharing it!

This is pretty neat,
i'm not sure if it's just your screenshots, but the largest one seems to have lost quality, and looks fuzzy?

firstfear In reply to Canine-scratch [2012-01-23 18:56:01 +0000 UTC]

LOL....did you read the tutorial at all? the whole thing is how to avoid that fuzzyness. It shows what you DO NOT want to happen.

Canine-scratch In reply to firstfear [2012-01-23 23:54:22 +0000 UTC]

Naw, i read through it all, but the two images still look fuzzy, it's more then likely my eyes.

dar-a In reply to Canine-scratch [2012-01-23 13:46:18 +0000 UTC]

But not blurry, huh? Pixel artworks should be crisp when resized, and so this tutorial is ok.
