Description My new chipmunk pelt. He was a casualty of the barn cat, Jack, at the house where my sister babysits. She brought this little guy home for me at the end of the day and I skinned and tanned the pelt myself.

my cat did the same

do you know any good tutorials on how to skin it?? I love that when cats kill it the pelt is still in good condition, instead of having a hole in it xx

and do you HAVE to salt it??

I wish it was legal to shoot those things over here, but we cant, and our friends two county's over will have to deal with them chewing up his cabin.

Cute little pelt by the way.

as sad as the image makes me I'm still very impressed that you were able to successfully skin and tan something so tiny

I'm not sure. I've only ever seen one chipmunk pelt for sale. It was on eBay years ago and I cannot remember what the going price was.

this is incredible. i sometimes look at my hamster and wonder what he'd look like skinned, this reminded me of that. hahaha. but this is really perfect.

How long does it take to skin and tan a chipmunk?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to FurryFoxFur [2012-11-11 23:06:17 +0000 UTC]

It really depends on your process and how practiced you are with it.

I shot one of those in the head and skinned it, then i washed it and put the salt on. After a few hours in the sun it dried right up... Fossil-feather's pelt looks better skinned than mine though, you did a real nice job..

Have you tried looking up skinning tutorials online? The taxidermy.net forums can be very helpful.

FossilFeather In reply to Drunk-Titan [2010-03-24 01:29:11 +0000 UTC]

Lol, very carefully! Really though, anything I know about skinning was learned through the internet. It's something that comes easily for me and I actually kind of enjoy it.

What kind of tanning solution are you using? Oo

I've never heard of one that works like that.

(read your description of how you tanned it in one of your comments)

do you have any idea where i could find one of these?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to DireWolf402 [2009-11-18 00:33:38 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, no. I had been searching for one for myself all over the place but, oddly enough, couldn't find one anywhere, for sale or otherwise. I got lucky when my sister brought this dead one home for me and I was able to skin and tan it.

You might try posting a Want ad on the taxidermy.net forums.

Very nice! I've never tried skinning... maybe I will sometime.
The other day we found my husky licking something... Here he had a chipmunk that he'd caught, and it wasn't bloody or anything and he didn't really want it. So I put it under a pot over an anthill. ^.^ I'm just hoping he didn't snap its skull or anything Hopefully this will be a nice new add to my skull collection. ^^

Nope right now he's sitting upstairs stuffed but no eyes lol. the eyes and clay are all I need to finish him though I'm hoping to buy some as soon as I can because I'm showing him to a taxidermy class I'm teaching this month.

Oh cool.

How did you tan it'?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to iho-ja-luu [2009-09-01 02:37:18 +0000 UTC]

I salted it after skinning it, let it sit in a special pickling solution for several days, brushed the tanning solution onto it and let it sit overnight, then finished it with brushing on the leather oil.
