Description Reverse Macro

Some people have never even heard about this technique. Others know what it is, but don't know how to do it. I made this tutorial this afternoon in hopes to answer any questions.

Hope it helps!

[edit]
For maximum magnification, use your minimum focal length (i.e. 18mm, if your lens is 18-55mm). Incredible results!
You can also pick up something called a "reversin ring" to make shooting a whole lot easier! Basically a filter that screws onto the end of your lens and allows you to mount it to your camera body [link] Super cheap and it makes things much easier

I purchased a reversing ring that mounts onto your camera and lets you screw on the lens making holding it tight so much easier.

Indeed, a very useful tool!

stumbled across this, its quite useful though it doesn't work with my 18-55mm or 90mm, but my 50mm works out well. Can't seem to get the aperture lock with my Nikon, as my depth of field preview is on the opposite side as Canon

FramedByNature In reply to bluefishrun [2011-01-18 14:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Glad you got it to work on your 50mm. Though I wonder why it would work on one lens but not another?

bluefishrun In reply to FramedByNature [2011-01-18 16:22:56 +0000 UTC]

my 18-55 doesn't have an adjustable aperture ring, so I'm thinking that's why that one doesn't work. As for the 90mm, think it just brings me waaaay too close as a supermacro. But its still fun to play with the 50mm

I can't thank you enough ! Ever since I bought my SLR I wanted a macro lens, but I still haven't got enough cash ! This is brilliant ! I'm already about to post a photo thanks to you !

Ive tried it with my nikon D3000 and the kit lens (18-55mm) and my camera wouldnt let me shoot without the lens on so I put it into manual mode but there is almost no light whatsoever and everything is really out of focus. Do you know how to over come this?

FramedByNature In reply to photographybyfallon [2011-01-13 18:34:37 +0000 UTC]

Glad you got it to (somewhat) work, I've heard a lot of issues with Nikons and this technique. I suggest trying to shoot something simple (like a coin) in bright sunlight. Put it on a table in bright light. When you first start, zoom it to 55mm (this will maximize your field of view).

Wait, it'll let you shoot without the lens in manual mode?
I have a D3000 also. Just curious.

Yep see the M (on the top dial) just turn it to that and itll let you shoot without the lens on

Awesome, I didn't know that. I have a film lens, but when I put it on my D3000 I was very sad when it didn't work. I'm excited to try it out with manual mode.

Unfortunately this won't work for me. I used a Nikon D40 and it won't take pictures unless the lens is attached.

Deviated-Septum In reply to Ap0stat3 [2010-12-31 05:39:05 +0000 UTC]

if you set it to Manual mode, it should shoot regardless. i had the same issue until i switched from shutter priority to manual mode.

Deviated-Septum In reply to Deviated-Septum [2010-12-31 05:42:14 +0000 UTC]

alternatively, if you have a second lens, you can put one lens on the camera, and reverse the other over that lens, and you will get the same effect, just remember to keep your apertures wide open, if you want a greater depth of field, then step the apertures on both lenses down together, rather than just on one lens.

I'd heard about this technique but I always imagined it was way harder to achieve. I was thinking reverse rings and duck-tape (hope that's how u spell it) Thanks for the tutorial. I'm so using this!

I tried doing this, wow what a pain! Holding it in place and trying to take a picture was incredibly difficult. I don't know how you manage.. very carefully I'm sure. I read somewhere though that there's an actual reverse macro ring. Any idea of its effectiveness? I'd love to do awesome pictures like these!

Nice tut + bonus tips. Gotta try them now that I have my T2i .
I've tried a similar technique before finding this tutorial, but, since i didn't have a DSLR, I used the 18-90mm of my analog K2, and my point and shoot A590is . [link] . Cheap Macro :3 .
