Description
Look in all fairness, I can see where some fans are coming from in terms of the writing. They have lost their sense of maturity in comparison to games like SA1, (Maybe) SA2, Unleashed, or even the Storybook games. I will also agree that Sonic himself is only "half of who he is" (As stated by Nerdword Entertainment on Youtube). I do miss the more serious tone in the writing myself (Which will return in Forces). But is it worth being so uptight about? To a majority of people, yes since the Story and World has a little more to it than Mario. However, if you honest to god believe that story alone makes or breaks a Sonic game, then this series is certainly not for you. Yes, Sega and Sonic Team tried to make the games more story based and add to the overall world, but that doesn't mean that Sonic is all about story since it was never really a story driven game series like Uncharted, The Batman Arkham Series, any of TellTale's games, or even Ratchet and Clank for example. If it were those games, then yeah the story would matter more. Just to go off on a tangent real quick, I consider Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception my least favorite in the series so far because while I did enjoy it (and it was my first game in the series) the story was all over the place. The other games were much more straight forward and entertaining, though Drakes Deception is still a damn good game in all fairness. This is the kind of thing that a lot of Sonic fans should really do instead of shutting themselves into their safe zone. Jacobsonic84 has made a meme a while back discussing the reason why Sonic Lost World and Boom didn't sell very well is because they were both exclusive to the Wii U (A console nobody gave two shits about compared to the Xbox One and PS4), not the story and tone. If you never played the post 2010 games but think that they suck because the stories don't have a darker tone, I recommend you open your mind and give them a shot anyway (As Dan Rock Productions said). You could be missing out on something you might like or even love despite the story. As much as I hate Sonic 06's story for being a boring mess, I still think it's not that bad gameplay wise (Not saying it was good though). But story doesn't make or break every game you know.Do yourself a favor, open your mind (and heart) and try to enjoy/judge the games for what they are instead of giving out blind hate just because something in particular isn't what you want.
Edit: I've been informed by Jacobsonic84 himself, telling me that Sonic Lost World and Boom sold poorly because of how they weren't good games in general (according to the overall reception) in addition to being exclusive on the Wii U. I still feel that being exclusive to the Wii U is still the main reason for Lost Worlds case though.

Great article, mate! If people want to play the game only for the story, then the game is not for them.
